A Fresh Death Warrant Has Been Issued For The Nirbhaya Convicts And We Are Hoping There Are No More Delays

Right now, the only thing anyone can talk about is the Nirbhaya case. After remaining dormant for seven years, it is back in the spotlight because on January 7th the Patiala House Court in Delhi issued a death warrant for all the four convicts (Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma). While we were busy celebrating the fact that Jyoti Singh will finally be able to rest in peace, this case got more convoluted with each passing day.

Allow me to fill you in on what has already happened (in case you have missed our previous articles).  The four convicts that were scheduled to be hung on January 22nd will not be hung on that day. The reason for that is, on January 15th, Mukesh Singh filed a mercy plea with the President. And according to the jail manuals, regardless of whether the mercy plea is accepted or rejected, the convicts have to be given 14 days’ notice before execution.

And now, we have some amazing news guys. In what seems to be the fastest decision our government has ever made, President Ram Nath Kovind has rejected Mukesh’s mercy plea. This means, Mukesh has exhausted all his legal remedies and there is absolutely nothing more he can do to try and overturn his death warrant.

Due to my job, I deal with a lot of news pieces, but this particular news makes me genuinely happy. But what made me happier was the fact that after the President rejected Mukesh’s mercy plea, the Delhi court wasted no time in issuing a fresh death warrant for all four convicts. They are now issued to hang on February 1st at 6 am in Tihar jail. Of course, this is only if there are no further delays and we are sincerely hoping that this execution is successful and without hurdles.

Asha Devi, Nirbhaya’s mother was not very happy about this delay and understandably so. Reacting to this latest update in her daughter’s case she said “Delay tactics are continuing, only the rights of the convicts are being seen…why not ours,” she further added. ” I am disappointed at the way we are only left with Tareekh pe tareekh even after seven years into the case,”

The larger question here is, what does this mean for the rest of them? One part of the story is that as a mandate, all the convicts that are to be executed of the same crime must be hung together. So, even though there is no more hope for Mukesh doesn’t mean that he can’t be hung. The other three, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma can still file for a mercy petition. Hell, Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta can still file a curative petition.

We are hoping if they do choose to go down that road, the court and the government do not pay any heed. After what these four did to Jyoti Singh, they do not deserve the mercy of any kind from anybody. Let’s keep this up, we are at the last leg of the battle we can’t waver now.
