MLA Demands Change Of Name Of Alia Bhatt’s Film Gangubai Kathiawadi. Says, It Maligns The City!

Controversy and Bollywood often walk hand in hand. Most of India keeps an eye on those in the limelight, especially stars and their upcoming projects, so we imagine celebrities are used to intense public scrutiny. And with that, comes pointless offense taking by the public, which at this point is a national sport. Which is why when we heard about new of concerns being raised over yet another film (Gangubai Kathiawadi) in the industry, this time to change its name, we weren’t all that surprised.

Landing itself plum in the middle of controversy is Alia Bhatt’s upcoming release . In a pretty pointless argument, Maharashtra Congress MLA Amin Patel is concerned that this ruins the reputation of the city of Kathiawad. . The movie that is based on the life and events of Gangubai Kothewali, the madam of a brothel in Kamathipura has already had its share of trouble before it can be released.

From Babuji Rawji Shah, son of Gangubai filing a case against both Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt, to now MLA Amin Patel claiming that Sanjay Leela Bhansali must change the name of his film, for it maligns the name of their city, the controversies continue.

MLA Patel said, “It is not the same as it was in the 1950s. Women there are excelling in different professions. The film’s title also maligns the name of Kathiawad city. The name of the film should be changed.”

Since the movie starring Alia Bhatt is based on the real life Gangugbai, one of the most powerful, loved and respected madams from Kamathipura during the 1960s, the movie is bound to depict the city as it once was. Reports suggest that the residents of the Kamathipura area, where Gangubai Kathiawadi had lived, have expressed their dissent on the portrayal in the movie.

They have pointed out the “blatant mirespresentation” and called out the movie and the makers for their attempt to malign the 200 years old culture and history of the region. Meanwhile, Patel urged the state government to intervene in the matter. Which makes sense, given that they are in the area and probably know about its history and more. Why Amin Patel is distressed about Kathiawad’s reputation is beyond us. As of now, the film is due for its release on July 30, and we honestly can’t keep calm to see it!
