Mithali Raj Announces Her Retirement From T20s To Focus On The World Cup. We Are Going To Miss Seeing Her!

You know what I want? Besides a raise, and 3 hours of extra sleep? That some people from my work place would just retire. Because let’s face it, they are straight-up annoying and would make the world a happier place by being absent than they ever did by being present. And while that is a thought that I feel for too many people on the daily, if there is one woman who I didn’t want to fall under this category it is the former captain and senior India batswoman, Mithali Raj.

She announced her retirement from an exciting format of the game, the T20s, and also from Test cricket matches to focus all her energy on the one-day cricket matches. Speaking on the topic, she said, “After representing India in T20 internationals since 2006, I wish to retire from T20Is to focus my energies on readying myself for the 2021 One Day World Cup.” And while we believe that the woman had taken this decision after due deliberation and thought, we’d be lying if we said that we’re not going to miss her during the T20 matches.

Ending her Test cricketing career as one of India’s top-scoring batswoman, with approximately 2364 runs in her kitty in just 89 matches, Mithali Raj has left behind a strong name and position for herself in the world of cricket. With an average score of 37 runs and highest of 97 not out, Mithali sticks to her decision of showing complete devotion to one-day cricket, leaving most of us heavy-hearted.

In a BCCI press release, she mentioned, “It remains my dream to win a World Cup for my country and I want to give it my best. I thank the BCCI for their continuous support and wish the Indian T20 team good luck as they prepare for the home series against South Africa Women.”

Having been the first Indian cricketer to reach the milestone of 2000 runs in T20, Mithali Raj has also led the Indian women cricket team with great diligence by captaining them through 32 T20s in her career including 3 world cups. Which is probably the reason why digesting this fact may be hard. But we believe in her vision to win the 2021 50-overs world cup, and for that we stand by her no matter how much she shall be missed in other forms of the sport.
