Meet Ayesha Aziz Is The Youngest Pilot Of India At Just 16 Years Of Age. She Is An Inspiration To All Of Us!

I am 24 years old, soon to be 25 and as I screech, skim and skid through the mid-twenties of my life, that many refer to as the make it or break it years, I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to just how many things I’ve broken at this point. And no, I am not talking about hearts. More like expectations. And, one of the major ones that my parents had from me was to perfect a skill as basic as driving a car, but much to their disappointment, I couldn’t go beyond driving one of those bumper cars as a child. Which I drove around in circles so I’m saying, don’t put me behind a wheel. Even now, I find myself setting unrealistic and nearly impossible targets of learning howto drive (even if it is an automatic car) before I hit 25 where as in another part of the same world, there is a 16-year-old prodigy, who is way beyond cars already, she flies planes. Ugh. I feel so useless.

Yes, you read that right, Ayesha Aziz, a 16-year-old girl hailing from Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir, has managed to break all records and become the youngest pilot in India, making the bunch of us so proud. Having had become fascinated with planes since she was a little girl, her story is that of inspiration and passion, that never really lets you down.

Sharing her story with TOI, she said, “I got fascinated by pilots. As I grew up, my fascination only increased and I finally landed up at Bombay Flying Club. ” And that is where her story took off. Daughter of a businessman in Mumbai, Abdul Aziz who lived in Worli, Ayesha had always made her dream of flying high in the clouds transparent to her father, who too was in support of her. He said, “I have always believed that knowledge and enquiry are keys to human progress. If my child had a dream which was achievable, I had to be part of the process and see that she realized this dream.”

Working hard, training at the Bombay Flying Club, Ayesha took everything in her stride to receive her flying license at the age of 16. And here we are at 24, still trying to figure out which pedal is for gas and which one for brakes. In 2016, Ayesha graduated in aviation from the Bombay Flying Club, and got her commercial license in 2017. Talking about the feeling, she said, “The first time I flew an aircraft with my parents on board, the greatest feeling I had was of independence … a sense of liberation.” And we can only imagine how fulfilling a life long dream would’ve felt like.

Since then, Ayesha also enrolled herself for astronaut training at NASA and even got to interact with legendary astronauts Sunita Williams and Jon A McBride, her inspiration in real life. Currently she stands as a proud and honorary member of Indian Women Pilot’s Association. Often regarded as a role model to other young and promising women, Ayesha’s story is one of commitment, spirit and discipline.
