Meera Chopra Fights Back After She Is Brutally Trolled By Fans Of Jr NTR. It’s Outrageous That They’ve Threatened Her With Rape And Murder.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, aren’t they? For example, I love the winters, but I loathe summer. Or, I care for Ranveer Singh movies more than I do for Ranbir Kapoor movies. These are all my choices and my preferences, and it’s only up to me to change them. However, being a woman with opinions, even about the most meaningless thing, has never proven to be a good thing. Why is that? Well, I suppose it’s either because people exist who don’t share your point of view.
In the case we are talking about today though, it seems like people are trying to suppress a woman’s opinion on which actor she likes better because clearly, nothing more important is happening in the world. And it’s not like they are going this by respectfully disagreeing. Nope. They are abusing her and doling out rape threats. Yeah, you read that right. I knew our industry took their actors seriously, but this incident is extremely absurd.
Before I confuse you any further, allow me to give you a little context. Actress Meera Chopra has fallen victim to, I want to call it trolling but what happened crossed into cyberbullying, after the fanbase of Telugu actor Jr NTR started a widespread hate campaign against her. They not only slut-shamed and abused her but also threatened rape and murder.

When I read all this, the first question that popped into my head was, why? The reason left baffled and astonished. You see, on last Tuesday 27th May, Meera did a #AskMeera session with her fans on Twitter. During the interaction, she was asked who her favourite Telugu actor was. She was later asked to describe actor Jr NTR in one word. To which she replied, “I don’t know him…I am not his fan.”. Another fan asked her if she had watched his movies like Shakti and Dammu. To this, Meera replied saying, “Thank you but not interested”. To us and to anyone with a sane mind, this would be okay. She has her choices and she has stated them. Right? Right.
But this didn’t sit right with men who are fans of this man. People began brutally trolling her online, shaming her and ripping her character to shreds for saying she likes actor Mahesh Babu over Jr NTR. It got to a point where #AttentionB***hMeeraChopra was trending on Twitter and people were asking her for her nightly rates. Seriously, this incident proves that our country has can stoop to new lows when it comes to women.

Talking about this incident in an interview Meera said, “I conducted an ‘Ask Meera’ session on Twitter, and a fan asked me about my favourite actor from the south film industry. I said, Mahesh Babu. Then somebody asked if I liked Junior NTR, and I said I don’t know him, and I am not a fan. That’s it. As soon as I said that, I was bombarded with abuses, murder threats, rape threats, character assassination and threats against my parents. I have got close to 30,000 abusive tweets so far.”

Outraged by this reaction, Meera tagged Jr NTR in a tweet and wrote, “I didn’t know that I’ll be called a bitch, whore and a pornstar, just bcoz I like @urstrulyMahesh more than you. And your fans will send my parent’s such wishes. Do u feel successful with such a fan following? And I hope u don’t ignore my tweet!!”
This started a series of tweets where she put up screenshots of all the abuse and hate she was receiving. I can’t stress this enough, this reaction was uncalled and downright idiotic considering all she did was say she liked one actor over another.

After a series of tweets, she sent out another tweet to Jr NTR saying, “Well I didn’t know not being somebody’s fan was a crime. I want to say this aloud to all the girls that if you are not a fan of @tarak9999, u could be raped, murdered, gang-raped, ur parents could be killed as tweeted by his fans. They r spoiling the name of their idol.”
A lot of people came to Meera’s support to express their displeasure. Amongst them was singer-dubbing artiste Chinmayi Sripaada who advised Meera, in a tweet, to take this matter to the National Commission of Women (NCW) with all the screenshots of all the abuses she has been receiving.
Chinmai tweeted, “One of the reasons I stopped saying I even “like movies” is because there are people who’ll use that as a means to abuse. As someone who gets rape threats every day, I suggest you file a case. Pick the abusive ones from this and file it with @NCWIndia.”

Following Chinmayi’s suggestion, Meera went after these abusers, as she should’ve. She took this matter to the cyber cell, the National Commission of Women and Twitter India. Urging them to step in and take appropriate action in the matter. The NCW tweeted back to her confirming that her complaint against these abusers has been taken up by them and the Cyber Cell.
Meera seems to be hellbent on acting against these Jr NTR fanclubs, as she should be. I can’t even begin to understand what happened here. Why is an actress suddenly getting rape threats for saying she doesn’t know an actor or particularly enjoy his cinema.We know people take their favourite actors seriously, but this was a completely different display of toxic masculinity. Also, can someone please tell me why is it that every time someone has an issue with something a woman is saying, they jump straight to rape and gang rape threats?
What also be needs to be talked about is the absolute silence of Junior NTR. The silence at his end when someone is being ruthlessly trolled is appalling. Step up and ask your fans to back off, that’s the least you can do.
Seriously, people need to stop acting like hooligans and calm down. Meera is entitled to her preferences as much as the next person. And let me tell you, nothing she says justifies a response like this one.
