Mahira Khan Writes An Open Letter After Being Called ‘Aged’. Her Response Was Calm. We Would’ve Slammed Them!

If there is one thing that I have realised after stepping into the field of journalism, it is that the more I write about celebrities, the more I feel for them and their plight at always being in the public eye. Because the spotlight might be great but it comes with plenty of judgement. Every word they say, every breath they take, the clothes they wear becomes a topic of debate, and it only reminds me how difficult it really is for them, no matter how glamorous we may think it is. A thought we’ve recently had for Raees actress Mahira Khan as well, who has been called ‘aged’ on several accounts.

The beautiful Pakistani actress, who made her debut in bollywood with Shah Rukh Khan in Raees, has not had a merry time in the industry. Constantly finding herself dragged into controversies, the actress was recently at the receiving end of vile comments about being and looking aged, and criticised for not picking up age-appropriate roles. A comment that hasn’t ever been doled out the male superstars in the acting industry, as they continue to play young lovers even at the age of 45 and 50.

So this time around, when TV actor Firdaus Jamal took a cheap dig at the actress, she decided to not keep quiet. She took to Instagram to post an open letter addressing not the hate that was directed at her, but to put out a word of peace and love among others. An action we all can learn from. It is easy to find ourselves in the thick of a situation and let our emotions get the best of us. But for Mahira to show a mature and composed front, trying to talk about the need of tolerance, acceptance and appreciation was just the right kind of perspective that needs to be doled out to the haters.

She wrote, “In a world full of hate, let’s choose to love. Let’s be tolerant of other people’s opinions and let our fight be against the mindset -that a successful woman is a scary thought. No it isn’t. It’s a beautiful and empowering one. Let us stop picking on one another so that this industry and our country thrives like no other. I read somewhere that ‘Stardom’ in Latin means – thank you to the fans when it was lonely. Stardom it is then! Love and Gratitude.”

And perhaps, that was the most befitting reply to all her haters. The actress, who has always been caught in senseless controversies, be it the time she was snapped smoking with Ranbir Kapoor or for the role she took in Raees, because god forbid the actress loosens up for a second. She chose best to reply with dignity and gratitude, reminding people of who she really is as opposed to the one she’s been made to look.

We support her in her decisions and her thinking, and urge for people to realise that picking on actors and actresses will only put across your own mentality and not theirs. We need to learn to stop measuring stars against unbelievable beauty standards and expect them to not have similar reactions to life as we do. It’s time we get over the incessant trolling and abide by the words, ‘Live and let live’ .
