Maanvi Gagroo Slams A Fashion Brand For Using Her Picture To Promote A Product That Hides Curves. Why Is This Still A Thing?

By  |

Here’s the thing, much to our dismay there is no deficiency of fat-shamers out there. From people thinking it’s okay to say things like, “kitna khati hai” to your face to people hiding behind their screens and usernames just waiting to drop comments like, “damn, all that flab” every chance they get, there’s enough and more people telling you how your body should look. You see, I have never understood how they think it’s okay to mock someone because of the way they look. Do they think it’s funny or do they just want to make people feel shittier than they feel? I guess we’ll never know.

Have you ever observed that fat-shaming has types? Yeah, one is the in-your-face kind and the other one is the very subtle way that might come across as unintentional or accidental. But here’s the thing, no matter what the kind is body-shaming or fat-shaming requires a strong retaliation. We have soaked up all that negativity and felt horrible about our bodies for too long, not anymore.

The reason I am so riled up about fat-shaming is that Maanvi Gagroo has just become its latest victim. Maanvi, who has always been very outspoken about being body positive has never shied away from lashing out against fat and body shamers and this time is no different. Once you read the post, I am sure you will agree that they had it coming.

She has called out fashion label House of Fett for using her picture, with no permission to do so, for an advertisement that conveys they sell clothes that “hide your curves”. In retaliation, she made a strong statement against that brand and we are so glad she did that.

Sharing a screenshot of the picture on Twitter, Maanvi writes, “I didn’t wear this dress to ‘hide my curves’. Not only does the brand NOT have my permission to use my picture as a sponsored post, they definitely don’t have my permission to fat shame ANYONE! I stand against everything this distasteful tagline points to.”

The sad truth is though, this ad only got called out because it carried a known face. There are about a hundred of the same advertisements that have been put out by various fashion brands but have gone unnoticed. You can’t tell me you haven’t seen a similar ad floating around on social media platforms. Well, at least now you will recognise what’s wrong with it.

This ad is problematic on so many levels. I mean, why are they, body-shaming people? There are about a thousand clean ways of putting across the message. Using an unauthorized picture of someone with a description that reads, “styles to hide your curves” is definitely not the way to go.

Please, someone, tell me, why does she need to hide her curves in the first place? Curves are gorgeous! I think by now we have screamed from rooftops trying to get people to understand why they can’t go around fat shaming others. And yet they remain oblivious to this issue.

Another issue is that people seem extremely uncomfortable because Maanvi is comfortable with her body. It makes them feel like they should point out the fact that she’s not ideal. Yes, they are probably pot-bellied men sitting at home, burping while they type that but they gleefully point out that Maanvi doesn’t look like she belongs to the world of glamour. Disgusting. Take a look at some of the comments on this thread.

We don’t get the appeal, then again, we are just people wanting equality and we won’t take vitriol thrown at us lying down. So what do we know?
