Listening To Sushmita Sen’s 10-Year-Old Daughter Talking About Adoption Will Melt Your Heart

Listening To Sushmita Sen’s 10-Year-Old Daughter Talking About Adoption Will Melt Your Heart

There are a lot of things that piss me off about the Indian society. Their fondness for girls who are thin and fair-skinned, the fact that they believe boys shouldn’t cry, their views on marriage (the list goes on and on). But the one thing that pisses me off the most is how they view adoption. I have actually heard people say Woh sab toh theek hai, par apna toh apna hi hota hai (All that is fine, but your own child is your own child). I mean, get it, you don’t give birth to the child you adopt but that doesn’t mean the child is any less yours. If you have the chance to save a child’s life, why shouldn’t you take it? When are we going to broaden our minds?

You might be wondering why I am suddenly ranting on about adoption, I’ll tell you why. Sushmita Sen, is a lot of things- the former Miss Universe, a successful actress but most of all she is the mother of two beautiful girls both of whom she adopted. At 24, Sushmita adopted her first daughter Renne and 10 years after that she adopted Alisah. Time and again, Sushmita has gone on record to say the adoptions were the wisest decisions of her life. And after listening to what Alisah has to say about being adopted made me want to adopt a child when I grow older. We are hoping after hearing this, the part of our society that doesn’t recognize this lovely concept will try and wrap their heads around it.

Earlier today, Sushmita shared a video of her 10-year-old daughter Alisah reading her school assignment out loud. The topic of that essay was adopting a child from the orphanage, in the video, Alisah says that “she is reflecting on her past and present.” She goes on to make some points that you don’t usually hear from a 10-year-old child. She says that you have the right to adopt because you will bring happiness in your family and that the child has a right to live. She also says that there shouldn’t be a difference in the way you treat your biological child and an adopted one. But the statement that caused our heart to melt was, “You gave life in such a way, that you saved one.”

In a world where people are fighting hook or by crook for utterly ridiculous issues, here is a kid who is trying to break a stigma with the pure innocence in her voice and words. Sushmita accompanied the video with a caption that read, “You gave life in such a way, that you saved one.’ #alisahsen… She had me in tears… This magnitude of love, acceptance, security, purity and honesty… the divinity in her convictions… uffff! Just listening to her opens the heart. #bornfromtheheart. I love you guys.”

Let’s all really hear what little cutie is saying and do away with this ridiculous label, please? It really is high time.
