Kriti Sanon Recites A Poem She Wrote On Domestic Violence When She Was 17. And It Feels Like Nothing Has Changed

We sometimes don’t know what instance in our lives will change us forever, and brings out an emotion from deep within ourselves. And when this happens, we don’t realise how strongly we feel about it. Sometimes it is art, sometimes a piece of news and other times just a simple story of someone you know, that makes you want to look at life differently. Something we reckon happened with actress Kriti Sanon, after she recently revealed how she had once penned down a emotional and heartbreaking poem on domestic violence after learning the extent of it from her house help.

Written by Kriti when she was merely 17 years old and studying in class 11, this poem was a strong reminder of how it is. When she found out the kind of torture and abuse her house help was going through at the hands of her husband, Kriti felt something inside of her move, empathising with the trauma of her domestic help. It was then that she wrote down a poem and titled it, ‘Abused’.

The poem opens with, “As the sun sets spreading blood all over the sky, my heart starts sinking once again, sweat goes down my neck strikes. Feet steady at the door, he’s gonna be late. Wait I can hear him come, the sound is not a stranger. I can hear the doorknob, I can smell the danger. The odour tells me he’s drunk again, full of frustration, ready to deliver some pain.” Capturing the essence of every household where such things place, the poem tugs at your heart strings.

Reciting it recently on her social media, she continues, “He throws me down like an insane, another mark he has left on my body. My sobbing acts like music and lulls him to sleep.” Captioning this heartfelt post she wrote, “Stand up for yourself & REPORT..because Its NOT OKAY! It breaks my heart to read that the domestic violence cases have almost doubled up during the lockdown period! About 700 cases alone in Punjab! And these are just the ones Registered! Imagine how many are not reported!”

Furthermore, taking an initiative to see this through, Kriti also shared helpline numbers that women, children or whoever in need can use, in order to raise a voice against domestic violence and bring an end to the crimes that happen behind closed doors. She wrote, “ONLY YOU can control your life.. so stand up for yourself! Its NOT OK for anyone to physically hurt you.. no matter what the reason is! ITS NOT OK!.”

And she is right, it is time we stand together to fight this crime and take back the control of our own lives.
