Konkona Sen Says Bulk Of The Money Is Invested In Mediocre Films And We Can’t Agree Enough

There are a few actors that you know for their acting skills. A few others for, well, being glamorous (if that can be called a talent). So while we would really want actors with calibre and passion to get more roles, to star in movies that make more money and the like, what we get instead are glamorous stars with some minimal acting chops gyrating on our screens. Which is why when Konkona Sen Sharma said that a lot of the money available is being invested in mediocre films, we couldn’t nod along enough.

I mean, look around. The movie that’s current raking in the numbers and the moolah is Bharat. Even if we are willing to make many, many concessions, this isn’t even close to good cinema. There’s Disha Patani is a badly draped saree with a barely there pallu. Even if we are willing to suspend our disbelief, I mean, there was no actually referencing of the time they were in, surely we can do with a script and the like? What we are saying is, Konkana has a point.

In an interview, the actress recently said, “Every year there is a handful of good films coming as a ray of hope but the bulk of the money is invested in films that are mediocre, which is just upholding the same stereotype. Look, I am not saying that people have to like the kind of films I like. There are certain films that are made and people consuming them, producers are making money…so it is a matter of demand and supply. It is all great. I only have a problem with the fact that a small budget film has to fight for a number of screens and right show time with those films that are 10 times of its budget.”

And she certainly has a point. Controversial films like Lipstick Under My Burkha, for the longest time didn’t have enough clout, financial and otherwise, to get enough screens in the country. It is only when Ekta Kapoor came on that the film went on to get a release. Badhaai Ho, a movie that went on to become a hit didn’t get the kind of opening reserved for big-star movies. The movie, mainly for its content, gathered steam and made money at the box office. Point is, there is an audience for good movies with strong storylines, but that’s not where the money is being put.

Konkona also pointed out that the audience also seems to enjoy this sort of content, making it a vicious cycle. “The audience has shown that for them, it is ‘okay’ to make fun of homosexuals, to have item numbers, to project a woman who is serving the desire of a man and his agenda. That is when the question arises that if they even want to watch a different kind of the film… Do they really want choices?”

We agree Konkona. But believe us when we say, we are in complete agreement. We are nodding so hard, our head might unscrew and fall out.

Seen it all?

We’ve got more!
