Kalki Koechlin Said She Didn’t Feel Any Maternal Instinct At The Start Of Her Pregnancy. Finally, Someone Has Said It Like It Is

Kalki Koechlin had dropped a major piece of news back in September and the internet just couldn’t keep calm after that. She had revealed that she and her pianist boyfriend Guy Hershberg are expecting a child and we’ve been just very curious to know her take on motherhood since then. Why? Because we know Kalki to not mince her words when it comes to her expressing her opinions. Neither does she feel obliged to adhere to stereotypical notions our society tries to impose on us. Recently, in an interview she spoke about her pregnancy unfiltered and we appreciate her honesty.

Kalki Koechlin revealed that it was an unplanned pregnancy and none of the things they expect you to feel, happened to her. There were no maternal instincts when it all began. “This was an unexpected pregnancy. In the first two months, I didn’t feel any maternal instinct. It felt like an alien invasion, where this little thing was acting like a vampire, sucking out everything from my body. When I heard the heartbeat for the first time, I got excited. The first trimester was bad but I am through that phase and looking forward to the due date in January,” she said.

We live in a society that places a lot of expectations on every woman. People just assume that all women carry their ever-ready, portable nurturing instincts in their pockets. You are expected to go crazy about babies, be like a walking hospice-cum-caterer to your family and just have a heart that melts at even the sight of a pup. The orthodox section of our society probably feels sanskari women are cooking and cleaning all day and when we’re not doing that, we are probably praying to God, to bless us with a good husband and tons of babies. Except, that’s not who we are and we don’t want to pretend to be like that.

So being clueless about what motherhood is all about, I actually used to believe what they showed in the movies – the moment you find out you’re pregnant, you have this crazy rush of feelings making you more motherly than ever possible. I am sure, a lot of women do feel that way, but that’s not a one-size-fits-all. We have to account for women who take time to come around.

When quizzed about her wedding plans, she said she is not in a hurry. So people who feel they can pressurise women into feeling like shit over out of wedlock pregnancies can suck it! The world is getting better and we’re in no mood to be told what to do with our lives.
