There are a few things in life that never really stop chasing you. For me, that has been my boss, a few of my still hungover ex-boyfriends, my craving for french fries and well, the society’s sadistic pleasure of putting me down as a woman in every capacity. I have come to realise that the only respect in which women aren’t discriminated, no matter what walk of life they come from, prejudice follows them. Take Kalki Koechlin, for example. The actress who is now a success, has a story to tell about her journey and it isn’t a bed of roses.
Bollywood, apart from being known to mint great content is also equally known to mint great controversies, most of which circle back to the numerous accounts of sexual harassment and discrimination against the female actors in the industry. And coming clean about one such experience is the Sacred Games actress Kalki Koechlin who recently opened up about the kind of struggles that she had to face, not just during the start of her career but when she at the top of the rung.

She shared how even after being part of the blockbuster hit Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, she was unable to find work for almost 9 months after it. She said, “I have literally had eight nine months of no work coming to me. That too after Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.” Elaborating more on the topic, she said, “It was not sexual proposition directly but indirectly. A producer wanted to go out on a date with me. I said no and he never got back. The film didn’t happen.” And it wouldn’t have been the first time we would be hearing about women having to pay the price for saying no.

She also talked about how being in the industry for so long, she had faced sexual abuse too and first sharing it with her therapist, she later talked about it to her partner to finally be able to share it with everyone during a press conference with Rahul Bose. Also making it a point to call out not just Bollywood for its sexual indiscretions and misdemeanours, but also Hollywood, Kalki said, “When I went to Hollywood, there was this casting agent who wanted to look at the wrinkles on my face near my eyes. It was after Dev D that I read someone had said, ‘Where did they get this Russian prostitute from?’ I was like, hey I’m not Russian.”

The fact that a select few women like Kalki among others are not shying away from talking about just how horribly degrading and annoying this industry is, is just the start and we clearly have a long way to go. Because women are no longer being silenced and we guess it was about time the penny drops.
