In Rajasthan, Ex-Husband’s Brother And Other Relatives Rape Woman On Isolated Highway

Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t deny that India truly is no place for women. Every few days we hear of a rape that sends shivers down our spine. And given our history, one would expect that women in Uttar Pradesh or Haryana are the worst off. But that’s not true. If you look at official statistics, states like Rajasthan aren’t so far behind when it comes to crimes against women. Recently, a gang rape from Jaipur has left us stunned and horrified. A woman was raped by her ex-husband’s brother and a few other relatives. Why can’t men just leave a woman alone? This is nightmarish.

In the Baran district of Rajasthan, a 30-year-old woman was gang-raped by her ex-husband’s brother and a few of his relatives. The five accused have been detained by the police and will be charged soon. According to reports, on Saturday night, they took the woman and her current husband to a field and took turns raping her. So much for the helpdesks and various other, clearly ineffective, initiatives put in place by the government. Is no one concerned about women’s safety?

The incident took place near the Baran-Atru state highway. The woman was returning with her current husband and 8-year-old sister after visiting a temple. The couple were on a bike and soon noticed that men on two other bikes were following them. They made the victim’s bike come to a halt at an isolated spot off the highway. One of the men kept the minor girl while the rest forcefully took the couple to a field. They tied the woman’s husband with her saree and then gang-raped her.

It all came to light when the minor girl got worried about her sister and brother-in-law and alerted some of the passers by on the highway. These people informed the police who began looking for the couple in the field. On Sunday, the woman was sent to a hospital for a medical exam. A case of kidnapping and gang rape was filed at the Atru police station against her ex-brother-in-law and four others.

According to the police, her ex-husband had left the woman because she was unable to bear children. They have filed complaints against each other in the past which are also under investigation.

I hope the five monstrous men responsible for this brutal crime are given the harshest punishment. The rising number of rapes in our country is extremely alarming. However, it seems like all this awareness is falling on deaf ears. We need an effective solution and we need it now!
