In Maharashtra, A Woman Raped, Beaten And Thrown Out Of Moving Train. She Could Barely Say Her Name.

Just a couple of days ago,  I was raving on about just how much progress the Indian justice systems were making, what with introducing landmark rulings, most in favour of women and all that. I was contested by quite a few individuals on my piece of writing, who believed that women didn’t really need to scream equality of feminism anymore, for things were already getting better. And even though I agreed on how efforts were now finally being made, what I didn’t agree to was the fact that is was bringing any kind of change with it.

And we say this after hearing about yet another case of a gruesome rape that took place in Maharashtra recently, when a 23-year-old woman was violated, thrown out of a running train and injured to the point she could barely spell out her own name at the hospital.

Brutally raped and hit on the head with something rather heavy, the 23-year-old woman was thrown out of a moving train, was found on the tracks of Vashi creek bridge in Navi Mumbai Tuesday morning.

The manager at the Vashi Railway station who spotted the body at the railway tracks, 2.5kms away, was the one who reported it to the authorities. Following up on the complaint, GRP constable Bhausaheb Shinde then arrived to investigate the matter, when it was found that the woman had endured several injuries on her head as well as her body, resulting from the rape and the violence.

One would think that after several hundred cases of rape being reported every single day, when the world sees the government and the civilians make efforts to preempt such a mishap from even happening, or protect women when it does, that women safety would see a positive change. However, we may have been too quick to adjourn, for seems like this country is still a giant mousetrap for women, who no matter how hard they try, would always be at the edge of lurking danger.

A Times of India report shared that, “Shinde went to the spot and brought the woman to Vashi GRP station. As she was severely wounded and was bleeding from the head, she was given first aid and taken to NMMC hospital in Vashi. The medical officer examined her and shifted her to JJ Hospital. She barely managed to tell us her name and that she was from Titwala.”

The woman worked as a house help in Mumbai’s Powai neighbourhood and possibly after leaving for home from Powai on Sunday, was attacked and left for dead on the tracks. As of yet the victim has been put on oxygen and is being awaited on gaining consciousness so further investigation of the culprit can be carried out. It is a shame that despite bone-chilling incidents coming to the fore and the punishment from courts getting ever so severe, perpetrators are still far from backing down.
