In Jharkhand, 17 Men Raped A 35-Year-Old Woman. And This Politician Blamed Item Numbers And Porn For It..

I may have said this a thousand times, but I will not shy away from saying it a thousand times more that the only one responsible for a heinous crime such as rape is the one doing it. Not the woman, not her clothes, not the wee hours of the night, not the alcohol, not the parents, not even the society, and definitely not the item numbers or in words of a politician – porn. But, the monster doing it. And in this case, there hasn’t been one, but 17 monstrous men who have allegedly raped a woman in Jharkhand’s Dumka.

The 35-year-old woman, who was returning home at 8 pm with her husband, has become the recent victim to such an atrocious crime, where she  has alleged to be raped by a total of 17 men. Seventeen. And yes, I will repeat it till it sinks in..

The victim who is also a mother to 5 kids, was sent for a proper medical examination today while an FIR has been lodged in the Muffasil Police Station. Santhal Paragna, DIG Sudarshan Mandal made a statement on the matter and shared, “As per the statement of the women she was gang-raped. Her husband was made hostage when the incident happened. We have arrested one person and the hunt is on to arrest the remaining accused.”

And while nothing at this point can be more horrifying than knowing what happened to her, what did manage to get our goats was the tone-deaf and rather exasperating statement of the politician Shivanand Tiwari who blamed not the men of the tribes who did it, but item numbers and porn.

He said, “No one could’ve ever imagined that a girl/woman would ever be raped in a tribal area. There was no rape in the tribal culture but the consumerist culture that began to bring in modernism, presented women as articles for consumption.” And yet somehow, from no rape to having 17 men turn into uncontrollable monsters overnight doesn’t quite fit into this narrative. And what has happened in Jharkhand, the rape and this mindset are both equally appalling.

He went on to say, “Item dance in films, ads, pornographic content on phones prepare mindset of rape. Just making stringent laws won’t end it. As long as the situation that incites people for rape persists you won’t be able to stop it.” And if we’re getting this correct, he means to ultimately imply that men are fragile, impressionable poor souls who will be easily swayed and provoked by whatever they consume having no mind or control over their bodies. And if that isn’t absolving these men of their crimes and pinning it down on someone else yet again, we don’t know what is.

As much as we as woke women agree with the inappropriateness of sexualising or objectifying women on screen, saying that it was leads to rape is taking away the blame from the men and putting it around the necks of someone else, giving them a clean chit. At the end of the day, this might be a Jharkhand rape but other parts of India aren’t better. No matter where the idea may have stemmed from, the one responsible will always be the one who dare violate a woman, and for that there should be no one else to blame or punish. And as a politician, he should know better than to put the onus of such an abhorrent crime on the culture.
