In Gujarat, Female Students Of A College Were Asked To Strip For A ‘Period Check’. It’s 2020 And People Are Still Offended By Periods

I am not even going to start by saying women have rights in our country. Because it sure does look like we don’t. There are many instances that show this, but the one we are reporting today absolutely takes the care. No, scratch that, this one takes the cake, the cake stand, it takes the whole fucking bakery and we are irate.

In Bhuj, Gujarat, 68 female students of the Shree Sahajanand Girls Institute which is run by the Swaminarayan sect, were asked to remove their underwear to check if they have their periods. According to reports, the girl were taken to the washroom where they were asked to strip one by one in front of four female teachers and the principal.

Even just this bit is annoying and uncalled for, and makes us want to punch the authorities but you have to wonder what egged them on to do an act like this, because surely they could see how utterly nonsensical this is? So, apparently, a hostel official reported that the girls were not following the rules of the hostel. What stupid rule is this? The rule is that when the women/girls are on their period, they shouldn’t be allowed in the kitchen or touch other girls. And it gets worse. According to a BBC article, ‘at meal times, they have to sit away from others, they have to clean their own dishes, and in the classroom, they are expected to sit on the last bench.’

First of all, fuck you. We are in 2020 and we will do whatever the fuck we want, whether we are on our period or not. Secondly, what right do you have asking female students to strip for a check like that? At every level, this is awful, flouting rules of basic decency and the right of another human being. We are women on our periods but that doesn’t mean that you rob us of our dignity. What absolute trash!

Some of the girls did speak out but they have been threatened into silence. Reports claim that some of them went ahead and complained but were forced to keep silent under the threat of expulsion. The students said, ‘The college management, instead of taking action, threatened us that if we demand legal action against the erring teachers, we would be expelled from the hostel premises. For the past two-three days, we have been emotionally blackmailed by the authority who don’t want us to take up this issue.”

There are conflicting reports about why this check even happened. Reports claim it was because there was a used sanitary pad that was thrown into the garden prompting authorities to find out who would have done this. Other reports claim that since the past two months, none of the girls had written their name in the register (one they are required to fill up if they get their periods) and this had enraged the people in power. Spo women not telling you about their periods because you socially ostracise them annoys you? Wow.

An inquiry into the incident has been ordered but as mentioned earlier, the students are being blackmailed into taking their complains back. However this plays out, this is absolute rubbish and no educational institute should be treating its female students this way.

Menstruation cannot be a taboo and it’s your fucking problem if you can’t wrap your head around it.
