In A Disturbing Case Of Honour Killing From UP, This Man Murdered His 18-Year-Old Daughter After She Was Found At Her Boyfriend’s House

My family is extremely supportive but yet mildly conservative. With two working parents, I learned independence at a very young age. They have always given me the space I needed without trying to control me. My mother is my role model and my father is my friend. I might not share every detail of my life with them but I know if I choose to, they will be there for me without any qualms. They are my backbone. For a long time, I thought this is how it worked in every family. Except I joined work here and today I am writing about this father who axed his daughter to death in UP.

This horrifying incident took place in Khanpanna village, UP. You see, the victim left her home on Tuesday night and went to her 20-year-old boyfriend’s house. Of course, she was completely unaware of what was about to happen and at the hands of whom. The boyfriend and his father informed the girl’s father that she was there and that she was insisting on staying there.

The girl’s father, taken over by rage, picked up an axe and headed over to the boyfriend’s house. A few family members also accompanied him. When they found her there, the father told her to come home but she started arguing. Of course, he wouldn’t have any of that so he swung his axe and attacked her over and over again until her body was motionless. The boyfriend, who tried to save her was also injured.

Oh, and this happened in full public view. Numerous people stood to witness as this father axed his daughter to death and not one person came forward to intervene and help that girl. It’s so shameful. Did all those people think what was happening was okay? No one did anything but sit back and watch that teenage girl die.

TOI quoted the Kanpur Dehat additional superintendent of Police (ADSP), Anup Kumar as saying, “It’s a case of honour killing. We have arrested the girl’s father and recovered the axe”.

The rate for honour killings in states like UP and Haryana are terrifying. Not only do women have no rights, but they are also marginalized, abused and coerced into living their lives the way the men dictate. And that a man, a father, axed his daughter to death in the name of pride or izzat, and no one batted an eyelid. It’s clear that upholding their family name is the most important aspect of their lives and there is no line they wouldn’t cross. Such horrid cases of murder turn up regularly because the women are spoken for by their male guardians. Anything else is unacceptable.

This case is particularly disturbing though. The victim, an 18-year-old girl was axed to death by her own father. No one should have to be subjected to this kind of treatment. It’s no wonder that the men to women ratio in states like UP is so terrible. They abuse and kill all the women that dare to step out of line. I wish there was a stringent law preventing honour killings like this one.

Even though the police have arrested the father, I am not sure he will get the punishment he deserves. There are various reasons for that but the main one being that this is the mentality of people. And so cases like this often end up being swept under the rug and never heard of again.

It’s messed up and problematic but that’s just how it works.
