‘I Don’t Respect Women Who Break Up Families’: Simi Garewal. Oh Simi, Why The Misogyny?

‘I Don’t Respect Women Who Break Up Families’: Simi Garewal. Oh Simi, Why The Misogyny?

The thing about opinion is, almost everyone has one, and more often than not it comes unsolicited. Especially during the day and age of the twitter, where everything that you say goes down in history and stays around for ever. Just like Simi Garewal’s recent string of tweets about how strongly she feels about Meghan Markle and her interview with the American TV Show host, Oprah Winfrey.

The interview with the royal couple-  Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with Oprah Winfrey managed to bring to the fore the true sentiment of the couple who gave up their royal duties to start a life of their own. Shedding light on what goes on behind the formidable gates of the palace, the two revealed quite a few explosive truths about the royal institution that turned their back on them in times of need.

And while the interview has amassed a strong and intense public reaction, most people standing up for the couple, one person who chose to slam Meghan Markle instead, was Simi Garewal. A talk show host herself, Simi’s tweet came by as unwarranted, gratuitous and deeply problematic. She wrote, “I don’t believe a word Meghan says. Not a word. She is lying to make herself a victim. She is using the race card to gain sympathy. Evil.”

If we didn’t know any better, we would think she was jus trying to be relevant but Simi made that difficult to believe. To make matters worse, she wrote a follow up tweet “apologising” for the usage of the word ‘evil’ as she wrote, “I withdraw the word ‘evil’. It was excessive. Calculating would have been more appropriate…”

Although what she missed out on, while giving her unbidden two cents on the matter is that she has absolutely no connection to the royal family to have a view in the first place, was how by writing what she did, she proved to be no less than a misogynist and racist, herself.

While one may assume that this would knock some sense into her, what followed next was quite the opposite. Still going strong, Simi Garewal  supported her poorly drafted argument by adding, “There are too many facts…for a starter try reading this.. And I do not respect women who come in and break up homes. Families & marriages take years to build trust..”

And with that we have on our hands yet another sexist, victim-blamer. You see, from where we are standing, the interview had Oprah talking to two people – Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, both of whom collectively made their statements. However, the only one who was held at gunpoint was the woman, the wife, the outsider who “broke up” the royal family. Because blaming the woman is almost gut instinct, isn’t it?

Almost instinctively blaming the woman in the equation, without even harboring for the possibility that Meghan might have truth to her words, it is people like her who end up discrediting the struggles of women. It’s a shame that even today, women don’t think twice before bringing down other women. Not that her say ever mattered in the situation, but her words are a classic example of how deep-rooted patriarchy can even pit educated women like her against fellow women.

Our advice, Simi? Just, don’t…
