Hyderabad Is One Of The Safest Cities For Women. Other State Governments Could Learn A Thing Or Two.

Unpopular opinion: Not all cities in India are as unsafe for women as Delhi and Uttar Pradesh are. UP CM Yogi Adityanath is struggling to curb the violence against women in his state, but he’s gotten nowhere. It’s not surprising. Comparatively, Mumbai is much safer for women. However, the latest research and survey show that Hyderabad is actually one of the safest cities in our country. Maybe all the other state governments need to take cues from the Telangana government.

According to a report in Telangana Today, women feel extremely safe in Hyderabad. They can travel late at night, book autos, cabs and reach their destinations without that gnawing fear that we are very familiar with.

Their confidence in the city comes from all effective measures the state government has taken to provide a safe and secure atmosphere for women. To do that, the Telangana government has started various initiatives like SHE teams, Bharosa centres, Dial 100, SOS buttons in mobile apps, etc. Unlike similar initiatives undertaken by other state governments, these are effective and trustworthy.

Telangana Today surveyed various women to see if they feel safe roaming about in the city. They all testified that Hyderabad is indeed one of the safest cities for women in India. One of the women, Shabnam, said she could travel to any part of the city, even at night and that the “city offers the security every woman looks for”.

Shabnam said, “I thank the State government and the police here for making Hyderabad a safe and secure place to work and live.”

Another reason why Hyderabad is deemed safer than most cities is that the police force is more approachable and responds immediately when a woman goes to them complaining about teasing or harassment of any kind. Again, I hope everyone is taking notes because this is how it’s supposed to be.

As glad as I am that Hyderabad is one of the safest cities for women, I can’t help but wonder what is holding the rest of the country back? I think it’s high time all the states take up strict initiatives to curb violence against women. It’s an issue that needs to be prioritized.
