Hina Khan Opens Up About Her Conservative Family And How She Has Carved Her Own Path. She Really Is Living Life On Her Own Terms

Being a girl with a dream is not easy. Being an Indian girl with dreams is…well. catastrophic. There are too many limitations, restrictions and familial pressure. Which is why when we come across a story about a woman breaking free and following her heart, it’s something that must be celebrated and talked about. After all, it’s those stories that inspire and influence. Today, we are talking about Hina Khan’s very intriguing journey from Kashmir to Bollywood. Her story would make a great movie!

Speaking to Humans Of Bombay, Hina Khan touched upon numerous topics. She started out by talking about how apprehensive her father was about sending her to Delhi for higher education. Hina also talked about her boyfriend Rocky and how her parents reacted to her dating someone from another caste.

In the interview with HOB Hina Khan recalled how “becoming an actor was never an option”. So when a friend suggested that she audition for a TV serial, she flat out refused. But eventually, she ended up auditioning and landed the lead role in a TV serial. She moved to Mumbai without telling her parents. And when they found out, not only were her parents were “livid” but a lot of her relatives cut ties with her family. Hina said, “I moved to Bombay without telling my parents; I was 20. The production people helped me find a place. It took me weeks to tell Papa. He was livid. Mom’s friends & relatives cut ties with us.”

By then, her TV serial began gaining popularity and after weeks of convincing, her father agreed to let her act if she promised to continue her studies. Her parents also moved to Mumbai. Talking about this, Hina Khan said, “After weeks of cajoling, Papa said, ‘you can continue only if you complete your studies.’ Then, my parents moved to Mumbai. I’d shoot all night, study in the breaks, then fly to Delhi to give my exams. The family stress was constantly looming–I told Mom to not bother, but it wasn’t easy. We’d argue a lot. But every year, my serial was the number 1 show; I fell in love with the camera.”

After 8 long years, Bigg Boss proved to be a game-changer for Hina. She let go of all her apprehensions and started making her rules. Talking about her relationship with Rocky Jaiswal, Hina said, “Just when my parents had gotten used to me being an actor, I told them I was seeing Rocky. It came as a shock; everybody in our family has had arranged marriages. But I gave them time & now, they love him more than me!” This really proves that with a little determination, anything is possible.

Just when TV offers started pouring in and it seemed like there would be no more adversities, Hina decided to quit serials and take the plunge into movies. And as many of us know, she also represented India at the Cannes Film Festival. Hina said, “I was thrilled when I debuted at the Cannes film festival last year; I felt so proud to represent India abroad. The way the entire film & TV industry came to my support, humbled me.”

It’s been 11 long years since Hina Khan kickstarted her entertainment career. We love everything about her because she followed her heart and achieved her dream. Her story also tells us that it’s okay to want something different for yourself. She made her own path and she is living on her own terms. What more can you want?

It’s like she says in the interview, “A series of difficult choices have gotten me here. From Srinagar to Bombay, from being the first actor in my family to dating someone out of the community to giving up easy money at my peak, I’ve proudly carved my own way.”
