Hema Malini Opens Up About Becoming Dharmendra’s Second Wife And Says She Never Wanted To Take Him Away From His Family

Sometimes what really amazes me is the fact that there are things we remember so well while we can’t even recollect what we had for dinner last night. Like I know the dialogues from Andaz Apna Apna and scenes from Friends by heart. I remember the juicy controversies around Salman Khan and Asihwarya Rai’s affair which was probably 20 years ago. Somehow, even the love story of Hema Malini and Dharmendra is so fresh in my head but it’s funny because I didn’t even exist back then. Of course, I got the gist from my parents who are equally fond of Bollywood. But it’s not just me. Even today, their love is talked about especially because when he married her, he already had a first wife and children. He even fathered four children from his first marriage – sons Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and daughters Vijeeta and Ajeeta. While some people say everything is fair in love and war, a lot of people still give Hema Malini flak for becoming the “other woman”. I honestly don’t know.

Recently, she opened up about her marriage to Dharmendra in an interview with Deccan Chronicle. “The minute I saw Dharam ji, I knew he was the man for me. I wanted to spend my life with him.” She further added that she didn’t want her romance to hurt anybody. “I also wanted to make sure that the marriage hurt nobody. His first wife and children have never felt my intrusion in their lives. I married him, but I never took him away from his first family,” she said.

Dharmendra was just 19 when he tied the knot with his first wife, Prakash Kaur. He had two daughters – Esha and Ahana – from his marriage with Hema Malini. So while people may indulge in criticising her for apparently breaking his home, I don’t think we have the right to judge anyone’s choices. I mean, he married at such a young age. With age you change and sometimes you fall out of love. You grow apart and can’t connect anymore. What happens if you meet your soulmate later in life? I am not here to criticise or justify their love or to give my two cents on whether Hema Malini broke his marriage or not. I just feel every person has a different journey and we don’t have the right to judge. I mean, they are still so much in love – it has to be real!

Dharmendra and Hema Malini have worked together in films such as Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, Dilagi and Dream Girl. They got married in August 1979. It’s been 40 years!

Hema Malini, at 71, is also planning to quit politics soon to spend time with her people. “My two daughters, my sons-in-law, my grandchildren and Dharam ji… that’s all I need, that’s all I want,” she said.
