Five Men Gang-Raped A Woman In Delhi. This Is Chillingly Like Nirbhaya. It Needs To Stop

It’s becoming increasingly clear that we don’t understand the concept of learning from our mistakes. Especially when it comes to protecting our women. In 2012, a horrid gangrape sent shockwaves through our entire nation. Have we learnt anything from the unfortunate fate of Jyoti Singh? Clearly not. The number of rape incidents are rapidly rising and more and more women are falling prey to monstrous men. The most recent incident of a brutal gangrape happened only a few days ago. The victim, a tourist guide, was raped by 5 men in a hotel in Delhi.

Before I go into just how horrifying this is, let me give you a little more detail about what happened with the victim. The woman is a 27-year-old who worked a tourist guide-cum-ticket booking agent in Delhi. She had taken a loan from a man she is acquainted with because she was struggling financially. On Friday, she had gone to collect the second instalment of that loan. And that’s when the alleged rape took place.

The accused asked the woman to come outside a complex near the Shangri La hotel. When she reached there she was asked to go up to a room to meet a few people who were willing to provide a load at a subsidised rate. The woman agreed to go. In the room, four men and the main accused were already present. They took turns raping her. When she resisted or made noise they threatened to assault her. This is disturbing and how.

After the incident, the prime accused, Manoj Sharma who works as a contractor dropped her home.

The victim filed an FIR on Saturday and narrated the entire ordeal to the police. Six people, including a woman, have been accused and charged in the case. According to reports, the reason that these 5 men gang-raped her is because this other woman provoked them against the victim.

Of course, the role of the woman accused in this is entirely sketchy. In the details provided, there is seemingly no role but we are sure it isn’t as simple as it is being made out to be. Either way, this is scary and that it continues unabated is a matter of concern. Delhi is really living up to the rape capital of India sobriquet.

Now, after reading about the entire ordeal, I know what you’ll are thinking. “She should not have agreed to go into the hotel in the first place”. It’s the same thing people said when the Nirbhaya case happened. “She should not have gotten on the bus”. We have to stop shaming, educating and blaming rape victims. All women are taught basic safety protocols at a very young age. The list goes on and on. We know all those things and I am sure the victim did too. Stop finding reasons to blame her. The real question is- what are the men being taught? Why has no one ever told them that raping a woman is horrid? Women have to completely alter their behaviour but men aren’t being taught that one basic thing. WHY?

Even though the six accused have been charged and identified, I doubt the victim will get justice anytime soon. Our rape laws need to be tighter and police investigations need to be quicker and infinitely more efficient. Nirbhaya got justice after nearly 8 years. Let’s hope we have learned something, anything from her case.
