On most days, I have to admit, I love my job. I love the fact that I come to work everyday, read up about what is happening in the world, put my own two cents about it out there and get paid to do it. But there are days when I dread it. And if you’re a woman in this world, unfortunately you will see a rape story, almost on the daily. You see, those are the most disheartening to pick, because even though you don’t want to read about another one of man’s monstrous atrocities, you know it in your heart just how important it is to write about it. And that is the exact emotion with which I write today, as I learned how the Charlie’s Angels actress Demi Moore was raped at the age of 15, with her mother’s consent.

The actress who has been an icon in the industry with her string of powerful roles and incredible acting, recently penned down her life experiences in her memoir, Inside Out. And a lot of skeletons came tumbling out of the closet but the one that came out today is perhaps the one that is the most painful. When the actress was just 15 years old, she fell victim to the heinous crime of rape by a man, who was known to her mother at the time. And just like that, after just reading what she must have gone through, we lost all our hope in humanity, yet again.

The incident, as explained in her memoir, revealed how one day after Moore came back from the school, she saw a man waiting for her in her house, who apparently had keys to the apartment given to him by Demi’s mother and told her how it was Demi’s mother who sold her to the guy for a mere 500 dollars. Subsequently, on the US TV show Good morning America, Demi Moore talked about how the incident hit her really hard and was the end of her childhood.
She said, “It was rape. And a devastating betrayal, revealed by the man’s cruel question: ‘How does it feel to be wh**ed by your mother for $500?'” Upon being asked if she believed he was telling the truth, the actress said, ” “I think, in my deep heart no. I don’t think it was a straightforward transaction. But she still did give him the access, and put me in harm’s way.” And the fact that it is true, makes it even sadder. To think how one’s own mother, who is supposed to shield us from any and every harm, was responsible in creating such circumstances that led to her daughter’s rape makes us much sadder than it does furious. And this is before we even get to the sickening mentality of the guy, who must have sat there with a dick for a brain. This world was never a nice place, clearly.

Her memoir also highlighted how her parents had been abusing drug and alcohol since she was very little, and her mother even attempted to commit suicide when Demi was just 12 years old. Clearly, Demi’s childhood was as troubled as it could be, but we are so proud of the woman she has become now, despite having all the reasons to give up on life. It is such conviction and faith in one’s self, that ultimately dragged her out of her parent’s lifestyle, she overcame her own addiction to substance abuse and she finally rose above it and actualised into the brilliant actress she is today.
