Deepika’s Apology Is Endearing But We Think Alia Deserved The Best Actress Award More

Every year, around this time, paan masala companies cough up some serious money and sponsor some awards. These go to the actors and actresses that will garner maximum attention for them. Despite the inundation of awards, the Filmfare awards still hold heft, some value. It’s this award that the industry really vies for. Of course, this year’s Filmfare came quite like an entertainer that it is always advertised to be. As usual, we drooled over the red carpet looks, lost our calm over some absolutely adorable Ranbir-Alia and Deep-Veer moments, and enjoyed the various theatrics.

Then, Alia Bhatt won the Filmfare for the Best Actress, and this upset a bunch of Deepika fans who took to the internet to express their disappointment at Filmfare not recognising Deepika’s work. Deepika herself also apologised for letting her fans down.

Deepika and Alia, were both in the running, Deepika for her role in Padmaavat and Alia for her role in Raazi. While we deeply enjoyed watching the two movies, both starkly different from one another, we think that the decision to hand the trophy to Alia was definitely more deserving.

Let’s rewind and think about it. Padmaavat was the epitome of grandeur. There was enough gold in there for Bappi Lahiri to consider moving to the period. The movie demanded intensity from the actors, got into a lot of controversy thanks to some very angry Karni Sena devotees, and saw a lot of excitement on its release. Raazi on the other hand, wasn’t all that grand. It was almost the opposite. But rave reviews made this a hit, the script and acting propelling movie goers to buy tickets.

So the thing is, we do think Alia deserved her Best Actress award. Raazi was a showcase of her versatility as an actor. From being vulnerable to courageous but deceiving and clever, this was easily Alia’s best performance. Deepika, on the other hand, while looking absolutely smashing and definitely delivering as a conflicted queen, didn’t need to prove herself in this role. Admit it, pretty much the better half of the second bit of Padmaavat was just Deepika walking into the fire with tears threatening to spill over.

As much as we appreciate Deepika for taking up the iconic role of Rani Padmaavati, we don’t quite agree with the netizens who picked Deepika for her work in the movie over Alia. We love Deepika as much as the next person but we agree with Filmfare, Alia is the toast of the season.
