Deepika Padukone To Play Draupadi In Mahabharata And Re-Create It From A Woman’s Perspective.
Recently, in one of my articles I had mentioned how if someone were to make a historic movie, Deepika Padukone would hands down, be the obvious choice for it. Because honestly, I cannot imagine anyone playing a better Rani Padmavati or a Mastani. She pulls off these larger-than-life roles with such ease and a charm that’s unique to her. Be it Deepika’s adaayein or her upright posture, she can don a simple angrakha and still look royal in it. Which is why, when I heard that she will be essaying the role of Draupadi from Mahabharata, I felt elated. And guess what, she is not just acting in it but also producing it jointly with the Ghajini producer Madhu Mantena.
Like us, she too is excited, possibly a lot more, “I’m absolutely thrilled and honored to be essaying the role of Draupadi. I truly believe that it is the role of a lifetime. While the Mahabharat is popularly known for its mythological tales and cultural influence, many of life’s lessons are also derived from the Mahabharat but most often from its men. Telling it with this fresh and new perspective will not only be interesting but also very significant,” she said.

Madhu Mantena is excited to shoulder the responsibility of re-telling an epic saga through a different perspective. “While we have all consumed the Mahabharat all our lives, the uniqueness of our film is seeing the same story from the point of view of Draupadi, who is one of the most significant heroines in our country’s cultural history. And Deepika is not just the biggest Indian actress today, but someone who can take this narrative across borders. If it weren’t with her, we would not be making this film on such an ambitious scale,” he shared.

The movie that is supposed to be made in a series of parts with the first one scheduled to release on Diwali 2021, is already garnering attention and for good reason too. Draupadi was considered very beautiful with her glowing dusky skin and svelte body. Unlike, how later in India, dark skin began to be considered less beautiful. Thankfully, that’s changing. Or so we hope. I am already exciting for this movie because I am hoping it will present a unique and empowered perspective of her story. And yes, there’s more to Draupadi than almost losing her dignity to a gamble.
