China Asks Its Airline Cabin Crew Staff To Wear Diapers On Chartered Flights To Avoid Going To The Washroom. What Even?

The coronavirus has wreaked havoc in all our lives. There is absolutely no denying that. I don’t even remember the last time I left my house without a nagging fear and anxiety. By the of this pandemic, we are going to develop hypochondria. We’ve all learned, the hard way, what the proper protocol is to keep ourselves safe. Masks, sanitizers and in extreme cases face shields have become a staple part of our lives. However, some people are going above and beyond. Like this Chinese regulation wherein airline cabin crew staff have to wear protective gear plus diapers to avoid going to the washroom. It’s a little extreme.

You see, China’s aviation regulator, Civil Aviation Administration of China, is recommending cabin crew on charter flights to wear disposable diapers while flying to high-risk COVID 19 locations, to avoid going to the washroom. This makes absolutely no sense and it’s very icky.

This suggestion came in the form of a 38-page list of guidelines for airlines to prevent the spread of coronavirus. These guidelines are applicable for charter flights that are flying to locations that have infections that exceed 500 in every one million people. That is a whole lot of countries. Also, wearing disposable diapers is not feasible and extremely uncomfortable for the cabin crew.

This “diaper advice” is in a section on personal protective equipment. That section also recommends the cabin crew to wear medical protective masks, gloves, goggles, disposable clothing and disposable shoe covers. Okay, these make sense. But disposable diapers are out of the question. Given that this entire pandemic began because of the massive outbreak in Wuhan, one would think that by now China knows what they are doing. But well, clearly they are more clueless then we are.

The other recommendations made by the CAAC include dividing the cabins “clean area, buffer zone, the passenger sitting area and quarantine area,” separated by disposable curtains. They have also suggested that the last three rows should be a designated quarantine area. Again, these make perfect sense. But I can’t get over the fact that they want their staff to wear diapers. What is wrong with letting them use the washroom and then sanitizing it after each use? That seems like a more probable and humane plan, don’t you think?

Taking precautions, especially while flying, is essential. But making airline staffers wear disposable diapers doesn’t seem like a viable solution to anything.
