Cab Driver Molests 17-Year-Old In A Moving Cab In Mumbai. Women Aren’t Safe Anywhere

School, workplace, home, police stations, streets, cars—there’s literally no place on earth where women can guarantee they’ll be safe. The sick pervs can make any place a living hell for a woman.

After the Nirbhaya case, women were very conveniently told to opt for cabs since they are deemed safer than public buses but turns out they are even worse. With cases of molestation, rapes and harassment by the cab drivers (both app-based and private) rising nearly every day, it raises the question, why not tell the drivers instead to keep it in their pants and just stop assaulting women?

In another horrible case of women passengers being assaulted by cab drivers, a 17-year-old girl was molested in a moving cab by the driver and his friend who was also in the car while she was travelling from Mumbai to Pune.

The girl had fled from her home in Bangalore last year and was working in Kurla in a hotel. She met an 18-year-old guy and the two were living together. On June 26, the boy allegedly committed suicide by jumping off a footbridge in Dharavi and the girl was sent to a children’s home after she was blamed by the boy’s family but found innocent. The Children Welfare Committee ordered the police to send her back to Bangalore but due to the lockdown, she was still in the city.

She fell sick in the children’s home and was moved to a hospital from where she fled and decided to go back to her home on her own. “She wanted to go to Pune, from where she wanted to board a bus to Bengaluru. She kept requesting cab drivers to drop her,” an officer said. According to the CCTV footage, she asked many taxi drivers to take her to Pune until one agreed to drop her.

On the way, the two men tried to molest her in the moving car. The girl asked them to stop the car, raised an alarm and fortunately managed to inform the police. The driver then started driving to Mumbra.

The police tracked the CCTV footage and nabbed the cab drivers in Mumbra. “We informed Thane control room and at around 3 pm on Saturday, we caught the accused from the car and rescued the girl,” an officer said.

The two men were booked under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code along with sections 8 and 12 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

The girl is now safe and her statement has been recorded. To think of a teenager going through such ordeal when she was just trying to go home is disturbing. What on earth will stop these men from preying on women? What’s worse is that there’ll be another case tomorrow and nothing will ever change until these lecherous men stop thinking that they are entitled to someone else’s body.
