British Woman Faces 2 Years In Dubai Jail For Saying F*** You To Her Flatmate. What Even?

Ever since college, cuss words have been a very active part of my vocabulary. I have always felt like the word “fuck” can express any and all human emotions, depending on your tone, obviously. However, not everyone shares my point of view. People often see cuss words as crass or rowdy. But have you ever imagined that something as simple as uttering the word “fuck” can land you in jail? That’s what happened with this UK woman living in Dubai. It’s a very tense situation.

A British woman who was living in Dubai since 2018 is facing a jail sentence of up to 2 years after her Ukrainian flatmate reported her for saying “fuck you” while the two were having a quarrel on WhatsApp.

The 31-year-old British woman, a human resources manager from Gloucestershire, passed the comment when she and her Ukrainian flatmate were having a heated argument about who used the dining table for work, in October, during the lockdown. Yikes, seems like the Brit paid a hefty price for that argument.

The woman had decided to leave Dubai and go back home permanently to be close to her family. However, on Saturday, when she reached the airport to catch her flight, she was barred from doing so. She was hauled off and told that she couldn’t leave Dubai as there was a police case against her.

The Brit had already shipped most of her luggage home and was just about to secure a seat on one of the limited flights.

That’s when the woman realised that her flatmate had taken advantage of Dubai’s strict laws and lodged a complaint with the police. She now faces jail or a hefty fine all because her flatmate refuses to withdraw the complaint.

The woman told The Sun, “ I can’t believe what my flatmate has done — she has been so spiteful. I pleaded with her to withdraw the complaint but she said, This is a criminal case.”

She told Detained In Dubai that she never expected her flatmate to take advantage of UK’s strict laws in such a manner. She said, “’We shared a flat and we were all casual with one another. I’ve never been in trouble in my life, and I’m shocked that I’ve been criminalised over a private WhatsApp exchange with someone whom I lived with. What’s worse, the messages were from months ago and only now, when I’ve shipped all of my belongings, booked a flight and when my visa is about to expire, do I even find out about this case. I tried to plead with her to drop the case, but she doesn’t seem to care about the impact this is having.”

All this because this woman uttered the phrase “fuck you” during a heated argument over WhatsApp. Her flatmate really seems to be harbouring a huge grudge against her. And I know I shouldn’t laugh but it seems a bit crazy that someone would be sent to jail for saying a word we so casually throw around.

According to Article 373 of the UAE Penal Code, it’s considered a crime to say the word “fuck” in Dubai. They believe that is ‘disgraces the honour or the modesty’ of a person.
The moral of this story one that my mother has been trying to teach me since I was a child. Think before you talk. Or in this case, type.
