Bollywood Celebrities Urge People To Stand Up Against Domestic Violence During This Lockdown. We Think It Is About Time.

When the government imposed a lockdown on all of us about a month ago, a lot of us expressed how this unusual situation of having to stay inside our homes during this pandemic was nothing short of a post apocalyptic nightmare coming to life. Except, we got the better part of the deal here, whereas there remained a few people for whom, suddenly their reality was far worse than their nightmares. We are talking about the ones stuck in their homes during such a time, and the ones who are facing domestic violence issues.

Something that anyway usually manifests behind closed doors, but has now found its outlet because people are stuck at home and frustrations are running high. From women to men to children, to even elders, this disease of domestic violence has been seeping into relationships and households and destroying people, and there needs to be put an end to such injustice and violence.

Addressing the same concern, has been the Bollywood fraternity through a video that has now gone viral, trying to spread the word about how now is not the time to stay silent. Urging survivors, victims and even witnesses of domestic violence to step forward to put an end to this, Bollywood came together to raise a voice, hopefully loud enough, to get across everyone who probably needs to hear it.

The video starts by celebs saying how, “During the lockdown there has been a sharp increase in the number of domestic violence cases. To all the men we say, now is the time to standup against this violence. To all the women we say, now is the time to stand up and break the silence.”

It continues further, “If you’re a witness to domestic violence in your home, please report. If you’re a witness to domestic violence in your neighborhood, please report. If you’re a survivor of domestic violence, please report it. Let’s put a lockdown on domestic violence,” as the stars all say in a plea for people to stand united in this cause for fighting domestic violence.

Filmmaker Karan Johar who also featured in the video, took to twitter to thank Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray for the initiative he took and wrote, “The cases of domestic violence have been rising rapidly across the country, and now is the time to stand up against it!” Initiated by the Akshara Centre and backed up by the Special Cell for Women and Children along with  Maharashtra government and Maharashtra police, this step towards putting an end towards such cruel atrocities against people in their own homes is not just a need of the hour, but something that was long due, and hopefully shall now be taken care of!
