Babita Phogat Riles Up Twitter After She Holds Muslims Responsible For The Spread Of Covid-19 In India. We Think Being Political Is Not The Need Of The Hour.

One of our first instincts in times like these, where all of us seem to have landed ourselves in our worst nightmares, is to play the blame game. In fact, there are proper scientific studies out there, that talk about how in the light of any misfortune, there are always a certain kind of people, who are quick to hold someone or the other responsible for the entire fiasco. And while some may assume the blame on themselves, there are a few who project it on others instead. And this time, it was noted wrestler -turned-politician, Babita Phogat.

The Indian wrestler who has now become a BJP leader is trending on Twitter for reasons that were less than flattering. Turns out, as the country is fighting its war against the life threatening Coronavirus, doing everything it can to keep it from spreading like wildfire, there are a select few, who even in a situation of a pandemic cannot look past the politics.

In a rather unnecessary tweet, coming from a champion like Babita, she condemned and attacked the Islamic sect – Tablighi Jamaat in a tweet by holding them responsible for spreading this virus. She faced almost as instant backlash for her harsh words, and rightfully so. In fact, a hashtag, #SuspendBabitaPhogat started trending on Twitter. Not the kind to back down, the wrestler and leader told ANI, “I stand by my tweets, I wrote nothing wrong.”

Quite recently, Kangana Ranaut’s sister, Rangoli Chandel too found herself deep into a controversy where she blamed asked the PM to let people who wanted to die, die. This was followed by a suspension of  her account by Twitter. And while Babita’s account has still not been suspended, we do think that there needs to be less blaming and more of taking responsibility at this point.

The 30-year-old wrestler also responded to the kinds of  tweets and backlash she was receiving  saying, “Over the past few days, I posted a few tweets (on Tablighi Jamaat). After that, I started getting threats on my social media handles. I would like to say that I am no Zaira Wasim. I would not get threatened…. I have always fought for my country. I stand by my tweets…. I wrote nothing wrong.”

Taking yet another dig at the community, by talking  about Zaira Wasim’s sudden exit from Bollywood, Babita Phogat seemed to have gone a little too emotional in  her conduct as she stood by her controversial words. Meanwhile, a few of her supporters initiated another hashtag for the wrestler, #SupportBabitaPhogat.

It is clear to say that the Tablighi is not impressed by her words. But considering how a large group of Tablighi members were caught hosting meetings near the Nizamuddin Station in Delhi, despite orders of staying in, we understand where the panic it has caused. However even then, we must remember how this is not the time for political and religious differences, as all of us need to stand as one in this fight against covid-19.
