Atishi Marlena, The Brains Behind AAP’s Campaign To Reboot All The Public Schools In Delhi, Is The Role Model We All Need

By  |

I am sure you’ll know about Arvind Kejriwal’s sweeping win at the Delhi elections. He had the upper hand against PM Modi’s BJP and Congress, so it no surprise that he came into power for the third consecutive time. Despite the major political unrest in our capitol right now, AAP’s win proves that perhaps all those attacks on Shaheen Bagh that were the points of attack in BJP’s manifesto didn’t entirely work, and thank god for that.

While there is never going to ever be only one good way to run a city, a metro one at that, and most of the time, you’re going to fall short especially in the minds of the public, there is the fact that AAP has worked in one particular sector – that is in fixing up the public school system in Delhi.

And the brains and brawn behind this is a woman who heads this uphill operation, Atishi Marlena. In a landslide win, she claimed the Kalkaji assembly seat against BJP’s Dharambir Singh with a vote share of 55897.

It was AAP leader Atishi's turn to take out a rally in Delhi as she made her way to file her nomination papers for the 8 February assembly election. Contesting from Kalkaji, Atishi is making another go at elections after she lost as the East Delhi candidate to BJP's Gautam Gambhir in the Lok Sabha polls. Considered Sisodia’s protégé, she is credited as the brain behind some of AAP’s much-touted educational policies. During the Lok Sabha poll battle, she was reduced to tears while reading out from an anonymous, noxious pamphlet describing her as, among other things, a prostitute. She also faced some controversy over her second name, which she later dropped from her Twitter handle and publicity material to dodge rumours that she is a Christian. This was no surprise as it was her efforts and huge contributions as the former advisor to Delhi’s Education Minister Manish Sisodia that the state-run schools have gotten the amazing uplift that they have. The three-month campaign called Mission Buniyad ensures all students from grades III to IX are given basic reading, writing and mathematical skills.

In a recent interview, she says that this win is a testament to all the groundwork that has been done by the party. Atishi, a simply dressed soft-spoken education reformer, only earned a token salary of Re 1 for her role with the Delhi government.

Within AAP, she has taken on many roles over the years. She was not only the educational advisor, but she also helped draft the manifesto for the 2015 Delhi Assembly Elections. She is also the appointed spokesperson since 2013 and represents the party on television debates. Atishi also spearheaded the Mohalla Sabha Project for the Government of Delhi. This was one of the major promises made by the AAP government and it involved decentralising governance to empower all citizens.

What a lot of people don’t know about her is that she is also highly educated. She studied history at St. Stephen College before she moved on to pursue not one, but two master’s degrees from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.

Atishi is the prime reason that every child in Delhi has a chance to a good education irrespective of their financial background. The level of education at some of those public schools that she helped reboot is as good as a private school, reports say.

She is a true role model for all of us!
