Arya Rajendran Becomes The Youngest Mayor In India At The Age Of 21

When I was 21 years old, which was not too long ago, I had just completed my graduation, gotten placed with a Big four and was still struggling to move out of my parent’s place, despite being entirely ill-equipped to handle a house on my own. For me, it was quite a change and responsibility, one that I still rave about to my friends. But now, that I see a determined 21-year old girl Arya Rajendran from Thiruvananthapuram all set to manage an entire state, I believe women are truly actualizing their true potential.

Arya Rajendran will now be the next Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, which would now make her the youngest ever candidate to occupy such a post in the country. The ruling CPI(M) declared on Sunday that Arya Rajendran will be the party-led Left Democratic Front’s mayoral candidate in the election to the post to be held on Monday. And this was quite an achievement for a girl at any state but definitely at 21.

In a statement, the party said, “The party district committee has decided to field S Arya Rajendran as the mayor candidate on behalf of the LDF and Suresh Kumar as the District panchayat president of Thiruvananthapuram.” The recent civic polls also showed how the LDF won 51 wards in the 100-member prestigious corporation of the Kerala capital.

Arya Rajendran, the second year Bsc Maths student of the All Saints College during her electoral debut won from the Mudavanmugal ward, defeating her nearest Congress rival by a margin of 549 votes.

At such a young age, Arya is already a state committee member of the Students Federation of India (SFI) and also the state president of Balasangam, the children’s wing of the Left party. Speaking to the press she said, “Our city is beautiful. To keep it like this, it should be free of waste. Besides a scientific waste management system, a thorough awareness is needed among people not to dump waste in waysides.”

Before her, the youngest mayor had been a 23-year-old Sabitha Begum who headed the Kollam Corporation. And now breaking that record by holding a position of such power and responsibility is Arya, the daughter of CPI(M) activist K Rajendran, an electrician by profession, and Sreelatha, an LIC agent. We couldn’t be more proud of the changing times!
