Ananya Panday Says She Hasn’t Made A Statement About The CAA Because She Isn’t Well Versed In Politics. So, You’ve Heard Of The Internet?

Ananya Panday Says She Hasn’t Made A Statement About The CAA Because She Isn’t Well Versed In Politics. So, You’ve Heard Of The Internet?

Bollywood celebrities have always been put on a pedestal, they are trailblazers and trendsetters. And let’s admit it, it’s as much our doing as it is theirs. So, it stands to reason that when there are violent protests going on pan India, everyone is waiting to see what they have to say about it. They wield enough power to sway the mindsets of huge crowds of people since they like a bazillion followers on social media. People protesting is not enough unless we don’t have a strong public sphere voice to support it.

Unfortunately, Bollywood has been either very diplomatic or completely mum about the Citizen Amendment Act. I am assuming they are afraid of putting their political views out there or maybe they just don’t want to get their hands dirty. What I don’t understand is, if they can talk about every little thing why did they suddenly tone their voices down when it came to something of this magnitude?

Though celebrities like Ayushman Khurana, Richa Chadha, Swara Bhaskar, Vir Das, Hrithik Roshan, Parineeti Chopra did take to social media to express their grief and concern over the Jamia University incident, many of the A-listers still maintain a stoic silence.

Ananya Panday though was one celebrity that really surprised us. In an interview she was asked what her take on the CAA and the protests was. She said that she does not believe in violence, but she can’t comment on it because she does not have enough information and she isn’t that well-versed in politics. You don’t need to know the nitty-gritties of politics to know what is happening in the country and what happened at JMI was wrong, but okay.

Ananya said, “I completely believe in peace and non-violence. We should respect all religions and just believe in peace, kindness and harmony. We all should live happily. I think it’s very important to use your voice and use your voice responsibly. But, having said that, I think you should have all the knowledge before you do that.” She further added, “And I think when it comes to politics, I am not that well informed to take a stand. I know I am an actor and whatever I say people are going to get influenced by that… and you know something I am going to say is going to impact a lot of people, so I would only like to speak once I know all the facts and information.”

This is coming from an actress who has 7.2 million followers on Instagram. We understand that she might want to gather information before putting a statement out there but what she said at that interview just seems like a classic cop-out. Besides, if she really wanted to use her voice responsibly, she would’ve gone read up on CAA and JMI and taken a stand. But perhaps she has never heard of a little something called Google.

With the advent of social media, Bollywood celebrities stopped being just actors and turned into role models. I just wish they would talk about this because we could use a bout of change right about now and they would be the perfect catalytic agents for that change.

Ananya, please read up and take a stand!
