Most of us 90s kids have grown up with Disney channel as a favourite on remotes and as our only respite from reality, imagining ourselves in the shoes of the characters we loved in the magnificent worlds created by Walt Disney. One such being the world and tale of Maleficient, The Mistress Of Evil – the story of a vengeful fairy and Princess Aurora. A tale that we’d heard as a bedtime story for years before we saw Angelina Jolie actualising into the role of the ever powerful Maleficent. The movie is all set for its Hindi release, with Aishwarya Rai dubbing for the role. And having looked at the teaser trailer, we don’t think there could be anyone more suitable for the role than her.
Often compared with each other on accounts of their success and beauty, Angelina Jolie is to Hollywood what Aishwarya Rai has been to Bollywood – a legend when it comes to acting and making a mark in the industry. So naturally, when the time came to create a version dubbed in Hindi for the Disney movie, no one could’ve justified the role better than Aishwarya Rai. And she was their first choice to dub for the part. With the kind of authority, enigma and charm that she is known to weave, we see exactly why it made sense to cast her over anyone else.
The Hindi teaser trailer that released yesterday, shows Aishwarya dressed as Maleficent, looking poised yet powerful in her role with just a glint of evil in her eye. She starts off by saying, “Sabne mera pyaar dekha hai, ab dekhenge mera gussa, meri nafrat,” (Everyone has seen my love, now you will see my anger, my hate) giving us the kind of chills we usually don’t get during Disney movie. The one minute teaser oscillates between the stills of Aishwarya and Jolie as they take us through the story, with the Hindi dubbing running in the background.
In an interview with a publication, the Disney India Head, Bikram Duggal said, “Looking at how Angelina Jolie fits Maleficent’s role down to the letter, it was hard to imagine anyone else essaying the character other than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for our local audience. We wanted to bring her character to life in Hindi and felt Aishwarya’s persona, which is filled with elegance and poise, would be a perfect blend.” And a perfect blend she is, indeed.
The internet as well as Ash’s husband Abhishek Bachchan was immensely impressed by how well Aishwarya has poured herself into character. Abhishek took to Twitter to share an adorable tweet that said, “How cool is this!!! @DisneyIndia #MaleficentMistressOfEvil #TheMrs.” Clearly there is no stopping this woman, who has proved that she does evil just as well as she does good.
After Shah Rukh Khan dubbing for Mufasa in The Lion King, it is Aishwarya Rai taking the reins, and we as fans are super excited to see how it turns out. The Hindi version is set to hit the screens on October 18 this year.
In other news, Aishwarya has also been roped in as the brand ambassador Cadbury Dark Milk and that’s magnificent.
