A Woman In Chennai Was Not Allowed To Sit For A Driving Test Because She Was Wearing Jeans. And It’s The Most Ridiculous Thing We’ve Heard!

When you’re a woman living in India, the first thing you get used to, after getting stared at a lot in your life, is to be denied a variety of things for no good reason good at all. First it was education, then job opportunities, then equal pay and now – even basic rights as appearing for a driving test. Now, the problem here wasn’t entirely to do with the gender as much as it had to do with the clothes us women wear for the test because turns out, if you’re a woman dressed in a jeans/capri for a driving test in Chennai, chances are you’d not be allowed to sit for it.

In what has been a completely ‘wtf’ kind of a news this morning, a Chennai woman was denied her chance to take a driving test as she was told by the RTO official to ‘dress properly’ for it first. For the uninitiated, the ‘improper’ and absolutely unacceptable clothes that the woman was donning were a simple pair of jeans and a sleeveless top. And don’t we all know just how dangerous tops without sleeves can be when driving a car? God forbid someone looks at our arms than the red light, we’d be in for a catastrophe!

And not just her, reports share that another woman who had worn a pair of capris for the test was also asked to go back home, dress decently and then reappear for the exam. And here we thought driving tests are all about motor skills, but the catch really is to cover our limbs.

An RTO Official commented on it by saying, “what is wrong in asking people who come here to be attired properly as they would while going to their own office.” And to that we say, this is actually how we dress for our office too. Besides, if you have a problem with it, it is by all means YOUR problem, and you always the option of looking at the road and the driving skills, more than you’d like to look at our arms and legs.

The official further said, “Whether it is men or women, the general advice is to come dressed in proper clothes. It is not moral policing.” Clearly, because it is fashion policing now, and last we checked there were no rules about sleeveless for men out there, who have in comparison a much dense growth of hair to put on as a show for the officials. But maybe they like that, because what other explanation they have to promote an absurdity like this, is beyond us.

For the love of god, people all across, need to learn to mind their own business and do just as much as required. Us women do not need to be schooled over what to wear what, and unless you have it in writing in law or company policy, kindly shove your reservations about what we wear, where the sun doesn’t shine.
