In UP, A Male Cop Calls Out TV Serial For Their Sexist Posters. We Are Glad Men Understand The Problem As Well

Anyone who has ever watched an Indian TV serial will be able to tell you just how problematic most of them are. Most of them play into various stereotypes about women and honestly, we’ve had enough. These serials either show women as hysterical, flat out dumb, extremely controlling or as damsels in distress. And all their plots revolve around how important it is for a woman to get married and be the ideal “bahu”. Ugh. It’s like the TV industry has been making the same show over and over again for years with just different cast members. The latest show that has come under scrutiny is Namak Ishq Ka that plays on Colours. The posters and promos propel the stigma our society has always held against women who are dancers. It’s sickening and downright regressive.

Namak Ishq Ka is a show that revolves around a dancer and all the labels that forced on her. Remind me what’s wrong with being a dancer again? Anyway, the poster in question was brought to everyone’s attention by  UP police officer Rahul Srivastava. He shared the serial poster on Twitter and called it regressive. Well, you know something is seriously derogatory when a UP cop realises it too.

In his tweet Rahul Srivastava said, “A flippant advert of a TV serial, ‘profaning’  a  ‘sacred’ art form.  The ‘Yellow & bold headlines’ asks the viewers “ would you accept a ‘dancer’ as your daughter in law? Dance as a gracious art form needs to be celebrated rather than de”moralized” This is plain ‘REGRESSIVE’”

And can we just say, we are glad men are starting to see how deeply problematic things are and that to us, is progress.

The poster basically shows the two main actors of Namak Ishq Ka and the text in bold reads, “would you accept a dancer as your bahu?”. It’s shameful that we are still producing content like this. This propels deep stereotypes against dancers. Although, we are glad men like Rahul Srivastava are calling out serials for their rubbish content.

However, after reading up on the storyline I realised that the show is trying to fight this stereotype. Although, if that is the case then their advertising strategy is clearly only to get eyeballs and in this case, it looks like it has worked.
