A Performance Artist In The US Wore A Bikini Made Out Of Masks To Protest Against The Lockdown. WTF Is Going On?

When the news about Covid-19 seriously attacking people across the globe, and at a lightning speed too, got around, a lot of different people had a lot of different reactions to it. I remember the first time I heard about it, I was not thrilled. To me, it was one of those problems that I thought could never happen to me. But then, a few days later India got its first few cases and within a week, the lockdown was initiated. And while there were the likes of me who made peace with quarantine, there have been a lot of people around the world, who have reactions that are completely beyond comprehension. Like a woman in Los Angeles USA, who recently sported a bikini made out of masks.

Claiming this to be her protest against the government enforced lockdown in LA, a woman identified as DaVida Sal has been putting up posts on social media wearing nothing but a bikini made out of surgical masks. A performance artist by profession, DaVida called the lockdown the ‘The New Abnormal’, as she captioned her pictures as, “If the MASKS work, WHY the 6 feet? If the 6 feet works, WHY the Masks? If BOTH work, WHY the LOCKDOWN?”

And honestly, it has to be one of the most frustratingly comical ways of protest we’ve come across. You see, as countries around the world lay down a lockdown and suggest people stay indoors, it is no news that the economies have fallen. People haven’t been earning, there are major layoffs, and to top it all, most of us haven’t been able to seek comfort from friends and family either. But despite all of that, the fact that people still don’t understand how we’re in the middle of a pandemic and need to do this for our own safety, is just plain stupid.

As was DaVida’s post, that didn’t just mock one of the many safety guidelines issued by the government, but also failed to acknowledge the seriousness of the virus that many people have lost their lives to. She wrote, “Please share your thoughts about the meaning of these images, what are they representing for you. We would like to hear from all of you. Now more than ever we must express ourselves with the brilliance we were created to be.”

Meanwhile netizens who were equally unimpressed as we are with her stunt, schooled her in logic by dropping comments like, “If seatbelts work, why have speed limits? If speed limits work, why have seat belts? If both work, why bother with car inspections? If anything reduces risk, why would we do anything to reduce risk further?”. Another user wrote, “Callousness and Idiocy aren’t a great subject for Performance Art”. And this hasn’t just been our reaction towards this woman right here, but hundreds of other people around the world, who are risking becoming carriers of the virus by other people who are simply done with this lockdown and are protesting against a system designed to keep them alive.

Be it London, Australia, Poland, people are calling it an act of socialism and that they are being ripped away of their right to freedom. In fact, there are people who have even been chanting slogans like ‘If we get it, we get it’ and moving out to exercise their free will. And honestly, we don’t know whether to be concerned about them or laugh at just how ignorant their approach to a global pandemic that has claimed over 300,000 lives, can be.
