A Horrific Tale Of A Woman Being Chained, Abused And Being Forced To Sit In Her Own Excreta Has Emerged. Where Is The Humanity?
We’ve gone hoarse. Because we have been talking constantly about the treatment meted out of women in the country by the men, we’ve been shouting from the rooftops about the shadow pandemic. And yet, the conversation largely continues to revolve around women and how badly things are faring for us without any change at a grassroot level. Because right now, the lines between human and not are blurring and we need to fix that, urgently.
Anyway, the reason I am so irked right now is that just this morning I came across a case that terrified me and at the same time gave me this sickening feeling. An incident that has shaken our faith in the belief that we use our intellectual capacities to our benefit.
The Delhi Commission of Women along with the Delhi Police rescued a woman who was being allegedly tortured by her husband and in-laws. While this seems pretty common and we write stories like these every day, this one gets gruesome as you get into the details.

The 32-year-old woman had been chained to a bed in her house, in East Delhi’s Triolpuri. In a statement, the DCW said that when they reached the house to rescue her, she was found lying on the floor with her feet bound by iron chains. She alleges that her husband had been torturing her for the last 6 months.
A member of the DCW said, “The woman has been married for 11 years. The room in which the woman was kept had no fan and had a terrible stench as she was made to lie in her excreta. She was tortured and beaten so brutally that her mental health has also deteriorated. Her husband was not in the house when the team reached there and found the woman lying in torn clothes.”
This is so brutal and inhumane. This is so horrifying that even jail time seems like hardly a punishment.
The DCW said that they found out about this woman from a ground volunteer who informed them that this woman was being kept in these unimaginable conditions in Triolkpuri. They released a video where the woman is seen sitting on the floor, bound in chains. She can be heard saying, “I have been married for 11 years. After I had my third child, my husband and in-laws who live nearby started torturing me. My husband beats me up badly.”

The victim and her husband have three children aged- 7, 5 and 1. And after she had the third child, the husband and in-laws started torturing and beating her up. So, she was a machine to birth children and when he had no use for her anymore he tied her up and tortured her? Is that it? This is cruel and vicious. Just how low can we stoop?
According to the DCW, the husband runs a flour mill and was things in the house were perfectly okay until the wife gave birth to baby number 3. When the DCW spoke to the children, they confirmed that their father to brutally beat up his wife.
The woman, who was freed, was taken to Kalyanpuri police station and then to the hospital for treatment of her wounds. Now, the police are looking into the matter.
I come across rapes and domestic violence cases nearly every day. That comes with this job. But, there are times when I come across a case that leaves me stumped. This is one of those times. How do people do this? If you don’t respect womenkind at least respect humanity. Women are not toys. You can’t get done playing and then toss them aside in an abandoned room to sleep on their faeces. That is beyond sickening.
We are glad that she was rescued from his clutches and now she and her children can live in peace. But my mind keeps wondering how many women must be living in conditions very similar to these victims. Who is going to rescue them? So many cases go unreported and that is the grim reality.
We need a world where women are safe. This is inhumane at every level.
