A Couple From Kerala Got Shamed For Showing Legs In Their Post-Wedding Shoot. Oh FFS!

A wedding day, more commonly known as “HER day”, is supposed to be the one time when everything happens according to the bride…and maybe the groom. We’re only kidding.  From the lights, to the decor, to her trousseau, most couples expect it all to be perfect and while they may still make room in their hearts for some casual criticism about the tikkas and the dal makhani from old distant relatives, what they will never be okay making is room for distasteful and unsolicited comments from people who have no business poking their nose into their special day. A fact that one couple from Kerala who recently got married, and then was shamed for their post-wedding shoot made amply clear.

Acting like and living up to their reputation of interfering online bullies, a bunch of self-proclaimed members of the moral and cyber-policing cell recently slut-shamed a couple in Kerala, now recognised as Rishi Karthikeyan and his wife Lakshmi, for their post wedding pictures. Why, you ask? Because apparently their intimacy and love made them feel uncomfortable. A plot that is ever too familiar to all of us women.

Hearing about the incident, curious to see what was it that riled these cyber bullies up (not like they ever need a reason), I tried to give this couple’s pictures a long hard look and wondered, what exactly got the goat of these people? Was it the plants in the background? The white sheets? the fact that they looked in love?  What exactly made all these people collectively lose their shit? And then I figured it out, it was the bride’s legs. Not so much the fact that the woman had legs, but the fact that she chose to show it.

The couple that had tied the knot back in September and was unable to celebrate it properly thanks to the times of corona, decided to make up for the lost time by getting a post-wedding photo shoot done, so as to commemorate their love for each other. Choosing the Idukki’s tea gardens as the perfect place to capture their legs (and well, the rest of their limbs), the couple got some absolutely romantic and intimate pictures clicked, ones that didn’t sit right with a lot of people.

Calling them out for promoting “nudity” or suggesting the couple to take it down to maintain “privacy”, Rishi and Lakshmi were trolled hard and bad for their supposedly ‘bold’ photoshoot. A photoshoot that was personal to them and their choice, and needed no one’s opinions or permission to be done or put up. But because people will be people, they chimed in with their intrusive and harsh comments nonetheless.

Lakshmi who spoke on the matter shared, “On the internet, they slut-shamed me and insulted my family and posed questions such as “are you wearing clothes underneath?”. And that’s the thing, people need to understand that it won’t be the answer that would be offensive, it is the question itself that is offensive enough who can choose to do whatever the fuck they want.

She went on to say, “I am somebody who wears off shoulder clothes and shorts. Showing my neck or legs does not qualify as nudity. But I was hit with a storm of horrible comments when the pictures were posted on Facebook. Initially, we responded to some of the comments, but then the pictures went viral and it was overwhelming to have to respond to trolls. So we decided to ignore it.”

And that is why, even after the unnecessary yet severe trolling with hundreds of people asking the Kerala couple to take down the photos, they stuck to their decision of it being their choice alone and did not take the pictures down. A move that we hope shuts people up and reminds them that their nose best belongs in their own business. Not in the incredible and adorable pictures of this couple’s post-wedding shoot.
