A 78-Year-Old Man From Indonesia Divorced His 17-Year-Old Bride Within Just 22 Days Of Their Wedding. Erm, What Even?
Knowing who is going to be ‘The One’ is never easy but it helps when you’ve sayings to guide you along, like ‘never marry the one you can live with, marry the one you can’t live without’. Because honestly, the whole’till death do us part’ requires too much commitment and I don’t know if I am cut out for it. But sometimes, you don’t need a whole lifetime to know someone isn’t made for you. In some cases, 22 days are enough. Like for this 78-year-old groom who sent his 17-year -old bride a divorce notice within weeks of their wedding.
As odd as the union sounded, considering huge age gap between the two individuals, their marriage when it took place in Indonesia got a lot of attention and we completely understand. Many called their love blind, while others trolled them for even trying, but the two decided to go through with it regardless of the criticism.
And so today, close to a month later when the news of their divorce has surfaced, it has again caught quite a few eyeballs, for there were a lot of people rooting for the groom Abah Sarna and bride Noni Navita to make it work. Especially the girl’s family who were pretty shocked upon receiving the divorce papers from Sarna’s family.

Noni’s sister, Iyan told the media, ‘I was shocked to hear this. Because everything seemed right between the two. But this sudden decision has shocked them.’ She went on to further clarify that there was no problem from the bride’s side and that the reason for it not working out would have to have risen from the family of the groom. She further went on to disclose, “After receiving the letter, my sister did not have an appetite for a day. However, the situation is now better”.
Rumours have it that the reason for this quick divorce is that Noni was pregnant before marriage, however Iyan has completely dismissed the rumor to be untrue. It is also being reported that during the wedding, Abah had given RM 2,819 (Rs 50,000) along with a motorcycle, mattress and closet to Noni, so much so that a truck had to be bought in to deliver the gifts. And unlike in India, Indonesia has a culture where the groom pays a handsome dowry to the bride’s family.
What went wrong between the former happy couple in these 22 days, we do not know. But what we do know for sure is that age might just be a number in most cases, but here it did seem like more. What are your thoughts?
