22-Year-Old Pregnant Woman Shot Dead By Her In Laws For Dowry. This Is Sickening

In an ideal world, marriages would be about love and two people building a life together, and two families joining to become one. Unfortunately, for us, we don’t live in an ideal world. In reality, for a large number of people, the institution of marriage is nothing more than a mere transaction. Even today, a lot of people treat marriages as a way to “unburden” themselves from their daughters. They pay big amounts of money to the groom as if she is a liability they are trying to get rid of while the other party acts like they are purchasing her voice, her freedom. This is a horrid concept otherwise known as dowry or dahej. But of course, this has been the way of our world for longer than anyone can remember.

More often than not, when the bride’s family gives the groom copious amounts of money plus a car, a house and whatever else they ask for, their greed comes into play and nothing is ever enough. They ask for more and when the bride and her family fail to meet their demands, in most cases, she is either harassed, mistreated, and forced to commit suicide or simply murdered.

That is exactly what happened with this pregnant, 22-year-old bride from Dadri, Uttar Pradesh. She was murdered by her husband and in-laws after she failed to procure more money as part of her dowry.

The victim, identified as Shaistha had married a man named Amir from Rithori village in Dadri in March 2019. At the time of this unfortunate event, she was seven months pregnant.

Naimuddin, Shaistha’s brother told the police that he had received a call from the marriage broker who had arranged the couple. He told Naimuddin that his sister was shot dead by her in-laws. He said, “We quickly came to Dadri, and found her dead with a bullet injury in her abdomen. My sister was seven months pregnant.”

He then filed a case of dowry death against Amir and 10 other members of his family. Although none of the accused have been caught by the police since they are all on the run.

In the complaint, Naimuddin told the police that his family had spent around Rs 10 lakh on Shaistha’s wedding but her in-laws were still asking for Rs 5 lakh more. He said, “However, since the marriage, her husband and in-laws were demanding dowry. They started torturing her for ₹5 lakh. We initially thought the matter would resolve over a period of time, but they have killed my sister.”

Just how sick can people get? Money meant so much more to them than their heavily pregnant daughter in law. They shot her in the abdomen over 5 lakh. Is that all a woman is worth? You know, this case is neither unprecedented nor one of a kind but it still leaves us with this horrible taste in our mouth. It just holds up a mirror to the vicious and vile mindset of some people in our country.

Vishal Pandey, additional deputy commissioner of police (Greater Noida) said that the Dadri police received a call from Amir’s father claiming that Shaishtha had committed suicide by shooting herself. However, the police found this statement quite dubious. Pandey said, “The neighbours revealed they had heard a gunshot at night. She was shot in the chest and that likely means that she hadn’t shot herself.”

The police have registered a case under sections 302 (murder), 304b( dowry death), 498 (detaining a married woman with criminal intent), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code. Also, section 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act have been charged against Amir, Iliyas and ten other members of their family.

There is something so sinister about dowry deaths. I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that the husband thinks he is entitled to so much just because he was born with a penis. It’s shameful. But like I said, it’s not unusual. If anything, it’s more common than any of us would like to admit.

How long before people realise that no amount of money is more important than a life? In fact, what right do the in-laws have over a woman’s family money?
