Teejay Sidhu Claps Back At Pregnancy Weight Shaming, Says There Is No Ideal Weight As Long As You Are Happy. Moms-To-Be Need To Hear This

I don’t get why people are so concerned (read: obsessed) with someone else’s life. I mean, how come my neighbourhood aunties are more worried about my weight than I am? They raise their eyebrows, make casual remarks and, if you are lucky, they even give unsolicited advice on how to treat your body, I repeat YOUR body, right. People never miss a chance to judge you but the only thing you can do is return the honours with a calm but classy comeback just like Teejay Sidhu did. The mommy-to-be clapped back at pregnancy weight shaming which, BTW, is so darn unnecessary!

Teejay Sidhu announced last month that she and husband Karanvir Bohra are expecting for the second time after twin daughters Bella and Vienna. Now here’s the thing. A pregnant woman is always under scrutiny and on the receiving end of unsolicited opinions from people who have nothing better to do. Teejay revealed that she’s often told that she is too skinny and should put on some weight now that she’s carrying a baby. But she came up with a better way to deal with it. She shut these people, with their ridiculous POVs, down and gave a word of advice to all the expectant mothers.

Teejay Sidhu put up a post on her Instagram account and captioned it, “People tell me I’m too skinny, that I should be heavier, especially since I’m expecting. (This is my 5 months pregnancy pic.) But for me, putting on has never been easy. And in the first trimester, I had terrible nausea, couldn’t eat anything! (There was no ‘pregnancy glow!’) Now I eat properly, I’ve put on weight, but still, it only shows on my tummy. I’d tell any expecting Mom, whether you’re the thin/heavy, embrace your maternity body. Don’t overthink what you ‘should’ look like. As long as you are healthy, there is no ‘ideal’ weight. Every pregnancy body is different – love yours, just as it is.” Preggers or not, embrace your body the way it is.

Whether someone is skinny or gains extra a few pounds during pregnancy, which is completely normal BTW, people don’t hold back from weight shaming. It can take a toll on the mental health of the expectant mother which is probably the last thing they should be going through during their pregnancy. It doesn’t even stop after you’ve given successfully given birth to a healthy baby after 18-hour labour. There is a social pressure to shed the pregnancy weight and get back into shape, or put on some weight and ‘look like a mom’ if you are skinny even after you’ve delivered. What even? Pregnancy weight shaming is real. And not just Teejay Sidhu, but all women, famous and non-famous alike, are affected by it.

Another celebrity mom, Sameera Reddy, recently opened up about struggles women go through related to self-acceptance during and post pregnancy. When a follower reached out to her saying she doesn’t feel beautiful with her post baby fat, she posted a video of herself without makeup, in all her raw glory and had this to say. “So here are my morning swelly eyes. No tricks no make up just me owning it! And I’m hoping that this enforces a positive spin on our own expectations of ourselves . I feel coming back to the public view in a way that I feel no pressure for my own mental health has helped me stay focused on being a good mother and a person who is self accepting that makes it a healthier space for all around me . Don’t dwell on what you are not and what you don’t have ! Let’s focus on the good we are all.”

While pregnant women like Teejay Sidhu are judged for being too skinny or too fat, on their stretch marks, lifestyle and what not, new moms have to deal with postpartum weight gain and body shaming. No matter what, people will always have something nasty to say about you. Plus, social media makes it even harder for women who are already in a vulnerable place and self-doubting themselves. People on virtual platforms are no better than those nosey aunties. In fact, they’re probably worse because you can’t dodge them by sneaking out the back door. But you can block them!

Everybody’s body is different and changes during pregnancy in different ways. What’s important is that you are loved, happy and healthy and embracing those changes in your body. Who cares if you gain a few kilos or are still skinny? Those aunties? Oh well, they can obsess about your weight fluctuation all they want. Maybe that will keep them busy in their miserable little lives.
