16 YO Charli D’Amelio Becomes The First Creator To Cross 100 Million Followers On TikTok, And That Too In Just 18 Months

Tik Tok is a craze among teens and adults who refuse to adult for a reason. The Chinese app serves as a platform for creators worldwide to show talent that we didn’t know existed through short videos. Although this micro content is sometimes cringe worthy and goes over your head, you can’t deny the fact that some of it includes really creative, funny and innovative content. Before a ban was imposed on it in India, the app was a medium for the youth to gain name, fame and money through these videos. Well, the Indian creators may have missed the chance, there is one Tik Tok star who didn’t just become widely popular with a mass following but also made history by becoming the first ever person to cross 100 million followers on the app.

Charli D’Amelio, a 16-year-old Tik Tok user from USA who rose to fame on the app for her dance videos and fun content. She started posting a little over a year and a half ago and has raced to a century of followers in such a short time. This time last year, she had six million followers and the sudden rise in her follower count is accredited to her fun personality and creative, entertaining videos. Before her, only two other Tik Tok user have been able to cross the 50 million mark, with Addison Rae at 69.9 million followers. She is a teen American sensation who has made history by being the most followed social media star at young age of 16, while I am hustling at my 9-5 in my late 20s. Maybe I should move to the US and download the app too.

Tik Tok released a statement in a blog post about Charli’s achievement. It read, “While we’re extremely proud of Charli and all that she has accomplished since she shared her first Tik Tok video in May 2019, we’re most proud of her continued and unwavering commitment to herself and the Tik Tok community. Charli has inspired joy just by being herself, proving that, on Tik Tok, creative ideas matter more than social connections and people are celebrated for being their authentic selves.” The platform has decided to donate $100,000 to American Dance Movement in her name.

Although she managed to reach the astonishing milestone in less than two years, she has had her share of backlash and criticism for her videos. Just before she gained her 100 million, there was a sudden drop in her followers because of one of the controversial videos she posted on the app. In that video, she has an argument with her parents and complains that she hasn’t reached the 100 million mark, which her followers found disrespectful, snobbish and ungrateful. She didn’t pay heed to the backlash and rather posted on her Twitter, “Be back posting normal content with a smile on my face! At the end of the day I know I am a good person with a good heart and I will never change that about myself. I love you all!!”

Clearly, she gained her followers back, or some new ones too even after the backlash and finally became the most followed creator on the most popular video creation platform, leaving behind even the biggest celebrities like Will Smith, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande. Well, good for her! Also, maybe it’s time for me to switch my job!
