This Bibhu Mohapatra Headpiece in Collaboration With Preciosa Is Brilliant
For India-born designer, Bibhu Mohapatra, crystals are an integral part of designing couture. A regular feature at New York Fashion Week, Mohapatra has become a global favourite when it comes to his burgeoning clientele. With star-studded A-listers like the former First Lady, Michelle Obama, Jennifer Lopez and Lupita Nyong’o wearing his creations, he has rightly made his mark in the fashion industry. And with such worldwide recognition, it only makes sense that his 6-year long relationship with Preciosa, the biggest producer of Bohemian crystals has finally come to fruition in the form of ‘The Taj’, a glorious headpiece.
Unveiling their newest cut The Alpha, in India recently, the brand has come up with a round brilliant cut for crystals that promises to revolutionise jewellery designing. Combining the rules of geometry with the brilliance of crystal, the new cut is an elevated version of their earlier design.
And of course, what better way to commemorate it than having celebrated designer Mohapatra create a splendid headpiece using The Alpha.
The gold-plated headpiece is accentuated by a sculptural bow, but the pièce de résistance is the sprinkling of Alpha crystals that’s spread across the entirety of the frame, and twinkle when they catch the light. Mohapatra drew inspiration from the felt headpieces that his models wore as they sashayed down the ramp at New York Fashion Week in his Spring/Summer collection. “I wanted to create it in India because you can’t find fine craftsmanship that fuses precious metals with crystals anywhere else,” said Mohapatra as he let us in on the artistry of the statement piece. The headpiece has been named keeping in mind the modern woman who is equal parts of powerful and feminine.
For someone who is primarily a fashion designer, Mohapatra has also made his mark in the jewellery world, with successful collections for major brands. “Clothes need to complement the jewellery and vice versa, so fashion designing sensibilities go into creating jewellery as well. They need to have the balance of modernity and authentic craft because that balance gives my clothes an edge over others and the same applies to my jewellery” said Mohapatra as he elaborated on how he achieves cohesion when it comes to different avenues of designing.
As for his future collection where we’ll get to see a lot of crystals and pearls created by Preciosa, Mohapatra intends to seamlessly combine comfort with luxury.
