The New Sabyasachi Collection Is Definitely A Throwback To Our Mother’s Times But Also Starting To Look Repetitive

Sabyasachi Mukherjee seems like the busiest man in fashion! The brand has been very active indeed, dropping new lines for the new season. Just last week, Sabya’s Winter 2019 bridal collection, named ‘Charbagh’, treated us to a visual extravaganza with dynamic wedding lehengas, delicious blouses and decorative pallus. This was followed by the release of a range of bohemian separates, easy-to-wear salwar suits and sarees.

While all of Sabya’s collections have an elaborate story behind them, we did notice some similarities in the new drop and previous collections.

The Boho Sets

The Winter 2019 collection consists of a bunch of bohemian separates set in monochrome hues. Aptly captioned  ‘Noir Nomads’, the separates consist of the classic baggy silhouette, use of motifs and drape-y fabrics to keep them looking fey. The looks are definitely smart but seem like spares from the label’s Destination Wedding Edit. And then we started to see a pattern.

The Striped Sarees

The Sabyasachi Saree is so unique that it stands out among its contemporaries like a statement piece. But that also means it can seem repetitive if the same style has been incorporated in a different collection. The black georgette saree with graphic lines is a look we have seen from the label before, even if it has been updated to a number with more work on the pallu.

The 70s Charm

Sabya also made us nostalgic for simple bandhani print salwar suits with his new collection. Images of our young mothers dressing up in something similar came rushing back to us. Was it indeed this throwback trend that Sabya meant to bring back? We might not know yet!

The Classic Sabya Floral Saree

Sabyasachi’s floral sarees have already been etched as the label’s signature look. This big prints paired with sombre colours are very on brand, but not working so hard on the imagination front. Maybe it’s time to try something new with the florals? We think so!
