Deepika, Sonam, Aishwarya: Why Is No One Wearing A Saree On The Cannes Red Carpet Any More?

Deepika, Sonam, Aishwarya: Why Is No One Wearing A Saree On The Cannes Red Carpet Any More?

If I were to ask you, what movies you are looking forward to watch at the Cannes Film Festival, I am pretty sure you would draw a blank. Because, let’s admit it, we basically follow Cannes for the fashion and more specifically, Bollywood fashion. It started with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan walking the red carpet in 2002 for Devdas. She wore a golden Neeta Lulla saree and perfectly embodied her wide-eyed character from the film. It was surreal, stunning and a great reference to her Indian roots. We were thrilled.

Since then, the actress has donned different versions of the saree, the most recent being in 2012. Since then, however, she has moved on. Her outfits have been billowy, fitted, glamorous, fairy tale-ish and more but the sarees have never made it to the red carpet. Aishwarya is an OG when it comes to Cannes, her red carpet fashion has only evolved over the years but the saree continues to be relegated to the background for another occasion.

It certainly makes us wonder why her styling team no longer deems the saree suitable. We see amazing international designer pieces styled on the red carpet with Aishwarya loading up on the the charm. So why not an ethnic number that could be a throwback to the first time she sashayed down the red carpet?

Now, Aishwarya made us aware of the Cannes Film Festival, but it was Sonam Kapoor Ahuja who got us to pay attention to it. The festival is a big event to celebrate film, fashion and beauty, and with Sonam Kapoor, came the drama. Every one of us was watching what she was wearing now. She’s been at the Cannes since 2011 now and every outing has been interesting.

In our opinion, Sonam has chosen outfits that allow her to bask in her Indian-ness.  She has worn quite a number of sarees over the years, the most recent one being a pale pink net sari dress by Anamika Khanna in 2014. While Sonam has put on uniquely draped sarees for Cannes photocalls, we wish she would give them their time on the red carpet as well.

Since we are reminiscing, we wish she would give the classic saree the same treatment like this Ralph & Russo custom made lehenga. She had arrived to Cannes a few days after her wedding, and her hands still had the mehendi , bringing a wholesome Indian feel to this global platform. If it’s anyone who should bring back the saree at Cannes, it’s her!

But wait, there’s also Deepika Padukone. The leggy beauty has slowly emerged to become on of the most successful actresses in recent years. Style-wise too, she has grown into her own. While in India, Deepika sports a healthy mix of sarees, gowns and more. But on the Cannes red carpet, with the exception of her debut in an ivory, cream saree, she hasn’t chosen to wear the garment again.

Deepika Padukone wears a saree like second skin, so it’s only a matter of time she wears one. Or at least that’s what we hope.  She’s been partial to gowns and dresses till now. Here’s hoping that changes.

One celeb who did do the saree last year and is set to do another again this year us Kangana Ranaut. The actress does have a flair for the dramatic , in life or with sartorial choices so we have our hopes pinned on her.
