Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s Umaid Bhawan Wedding Venue Rent Will Make Your Jaws Drop. We Are Weeping.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas wasn’t messing around when she wished to have an epic ‘Big Fat Indian Wedding’. The actress got married to US-based singer Nick Jonas in a 4-day long ceremony, a spectacle that garnered much media attention all over the world. There wasn’t a single interview that PeeCee did post her wedding which did not involve a question about her lavish wedding. Most of which she wrote off as being traditionally indulgent, with her contagious laugh in tow of course!

It is almost unbelievable to think that it has been a year since the grandest Bollywood wedding went down last year. The couple celebrated their first anniversary on December 1st, making us realise how quickly time flies by. But hey, we are still taking about this mega event and the recent revelation about it is the amount that they paid to rent the Umaid Bhawan Palace as their destination wedding venue. The hotel stretches across 26 acres of land (including 15 acres of private gardens) and boasts of an impressive 347 room count. And boy, is the hiring price a big ole’ ‘Cha-Ching’!

Puneet Chhatwal, chief executive officer and managing director of Indian Hotels Company Ltd that operates the Umaid Bhawan Palace spoke about PeeCee choosing an Indian destination for her nuptials. He revealed that high profile weddings, the top percentile, are an asset to the country’s economy by saying, “That one per cent (of top spenders) helps. Last year, we had Priyanka Chopra’s wedding in Umaid Bhawan Palace and it makes up for the revenue of 3 months. One is enough.” And, that’s just the rent!

According to reports that followed the couple’s wedding, the couple had spent over $4,61,000 (~Rs 3,27,73,642) on the venue alone that would have included all of their festivities like Sangeet, Mehendi, the Hindu and Christian wedding. Chhatwal believes that these high-profile weddings are very important for the hospitality industry and commented that the Isha Ambani-Anand Piramal wedding would also have helped a lot of brands. The details to this are yet to be revealed.

While the number did shock us, we weren’t completely surprised to learn this about PeeCee’s wedding. From her posh bridal shower being held at the iconic Tiffany & Co.’s Blue Box Cafe at New York City to the absolute whirlwind of a tour she took her bridesmaids on for her bachelorette, this woman knows how to splurge. So does Nick cuz’ PeeCee’s ring is reported to cost around $200,000 (~Rs 14,247,489)! Don’t be surprised if you see a Tiffany store pop up in a luxury mall near you, as industry insiders have been speculating on the same for a while.

Priyanka’s wedding has opened a lot of doors for westerners to experience and bask in the spending power of our high earners. From foreigners flocking to the country in hopes of a Bollywood-style wedding to top designers putting their most respected ateliers on the task to create custom outfits for our celebrity bride, she set a whole new standard for how we see these event-weddings. PeeCee’s Christian wedding dress was a custom Ralph Lauren which took over 1,826 hours of handwork by 15 skilled artisans to be made. You can’t even put a price on something like that.

Her Hindu wedding’s red Sabaysachi sindoori-red lehenga was followed by a spike in similar lehengas chosen by ‘desi’ brides for their own wedding. According to the Sabya, it took 110 embroiderers from Kolkata a total of 3,720 hours to custom-make the ensemble. He also revealed that, “Priyanka is a fun girl. A jeans-and-T-shirt-girl who loves ‘sick’ shoes. An Indian getting married to an American, Priyanka wanted her wedding outfit to represent both their cultures. We took the route of creating Indian bridal wear with elements of European couture. Priyanka was very clear that she wanted to wear red. Her outfit had all the markers of an Indian bride: bindi, sindoor, nath, maang tikka, traditional jewellery and kalira. She wanted to preserve her memories and emotions in everything. So we got Priyanka and Nick’s names inscribed on her waistband along with her parents’ names.”
