Noida Police To Start Issuing Red Cards To Sexual Offenders As A Warning And We Think It’s About Time!

For a long time now, the country has been struggling to fight for a cause that is bigger and greater than all of us – women’s safety. And I say struggling because it’s been years since the severity of assault and rapes have been highlighted but no real and concrete action has taken place. That was up until now. We applaud this, what seems like, a genuine effort by the Noida Police. They plan to issue red cards to offenders who are found harassing or eve-teasing women.

The red cards here will be issued by the anti-romeo squads that came into existence soon after Yogi Adityanath was elected as the chief minister in Uttar Pradesh in 2017. The idea is to have officers and sleuths in public places, in civilian clothes, to keep an eye out for eve-teasers and harassers, and further issue them such cards as a one-time warning before proceeding with legal, criminal action against them.

Noida Police also plans to reach out to students in schools and colleges in order to take their feedback regarding deployment of these squads at public places.I guess it comes as no surprise to most of us that men who indulge in the pathetic act of eve-teasing, when not kept in check, simply assume that they shall always escape unscathed. So this attempt at nipping it in the bud and making amends at the root level might just be a step in the right direction.

The red cards that will be issued, will have details like the offenders’ name, age, address, parents’ information along with the offence for which they have been issued the card such as passing lewd remarks, making objectionable gestures at women, among others.

A spokesperson also shared how, “Forms will be distributed to female students for their feedback on the deployment of anti-Romeo squads. The forms will include questions like places where the girls feel such squads are required – like outside schools, or coaching centers, etc and action would be taken accordingly,”

Finally, what women feel and want to say shall be taken into account, and if all goes well, this will be a great preventive measure for bringing down the atrocity rate in the country. That is only of course, when other states think of implying the same, as they must.
