Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2016: Day 1
With Tarun Tahiliani‘s offsite show kickstarting the 2016 edition of Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive night before last, Day 1 of the fashion extravanganza was nothing short of a celebration of silhouettes. From promising Gen Next designers to popular and edgy ones like Atsu and Shift, the designers played with colours, fabrics, cuts and, most importantly, shapes. Closing the day was, of course, Manish Malhotra’s dreamlike show with Shraddha Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput as showstoppers.
We bring you a round-up of our favourite looks from Day 1 of Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive.
Easy-breezy silhouettes in soft, comfy fabrics largely defined the collection showcased by Shift. While most looks featured solid winter shades, a few printed pieces provided some pleasant sartorial relief. Shift’s designs are perfect to take from the bar to the boardroom so we’re already earmarking our favourite pieces.
Atsu, true to their signature style, showcased some uber sexy, form-fitting looks, largely in monochromes, with a dash of brights here and there. The showstopping dress was a bold fringed number that’s inspiring us to hit the gym again (will you check out that bod?)
As his final goodbye to the ramp, Wendell Rodericks collaborated with his protege, Schulen Fernandes, to produce Trapezoid, a celebration of the free-flowing style we all know and love from the house of fashion. With Schulen taking centrestage, the collection showcased delicious pastel hues in asymmetrical silhouettes fluttering down the catwalk in soft fabrics like silk crepe, paper silk, chanderi and handloom. The best part? Real women from various walks of life took to the ramp to display the Goans’ collection, providing a refreshing change from the perfect size zero models in every other show.
The Gen Next show at this season’s LFW was just that — Gen Z. Cool, suave and edgy, these designers have perfectly tapped into Gen Z’s sensibilities. Paridhi Jaipuria, Gaurav Khanijo, Anupreet Sidhu, Vaibhav Singh, Diming Rubu, and Abhishek Paatni were the chosen ones this year. Interesting appliqué, leather and silks, and tons of layering were just a few features of this cool, cool show.
Continuing tradition, the LFW stage also acted as a platform to the winners of the Grazia Young Fashion Awards. Unconventional jewellery, the athleisure trend going strong and multiple layering encompassed the look and feel here. The winning designers included Doodlage, Ilk, Lovebirds, Misho, Chola, Shivangi Sahni, Cord, and Sahil Aneja.
Taking ethnic and Indo-western fusion wear a notch higher was Aagor by Ants Crafts, once again in flowing silhouettes, fringe detailing and winter-appropriate fashion. Antar Agni, true to its name, turned up the heat but with the menswear. The collection displayed was primarily in black and navy, with bearded models donning long jackets, cropped pants and tailored pieces. The girls were seen in extremely wearable yet edgy creations that we’re totally looking at for the oncoming winter.
Pastel pinks, lavenders and muted golds took over the catwalk as Myoho came on. Ethnic wear we’re looking at for the next bestie’s sangeet, this collection was quite stunning, especially in the choice of colours and wearability factor. Ka-Sha, on the other hand, was a bit out there but perfect for those looking to experiment — khadi handloom fabrics, checks and fringes, and tons of layers summarised this show.
By far two of our favourite shows of the day, Naturally Anuradha’s Assam-inspired collection and Pariah’s by Pranami’s designs were innately Indian, celebrating homegrown colours, fabrics, and attire, such as the sari. Rich, intricate embroidery meshed beautifully with pure silk and comfy cotton pieces as models showcased everything from lehengas to dresses that were ethnic in essence.
