Kangana Ranaut’s Retro Saree Look At Cannes 2019 Is Indo-Western Gone Wrong!
Last night, Kangana Ranaut gave us the first of her many looks from the Cannes Film Festival. The actress is in the French Riviera representing the Grey Goose vodka brand. She will be a part of India Pavilion as well, a panel put together to discuss the future of Indian cinema. Kangana put together a very impressive catalogue of looks last year, with her red carpet catsuit making into our top 1o.
Before heading to the festival Kangana dropped hints about what her saree look for this year would be, and honestly, we couldn’t conceal our excitement. The saree was to be a unique creation from designer duo Falguni Shane Peacock, paying tribute to Indian weavers.
The elements used to put together Kangana’s look are perfectly great in isolation. The Kanjeevaram saree from the handicraft brand Madhurya is a beautiful creation in itself. The peplum belt and evening gloves designed by Falguni Shane Peacock are as regal as they can possibly be. But the amalgamation of all these singular pieces just did not work together.
The Kanjeevaram has been done on the Cannes red carpet before. We remember the likes of Nandita Das and Tillotama Shome wearing their unique versions of the saree. When Kangana’s styling team revealed that they wanted to put Indian artisans and their craftsmanship in the spotlight at Cannes 2019, we hoped it would take stage, front and centre. Sadly, the beauty of the Kanjeevaram gets overshadowed by the zari belt and velvet gloves.
In our opinion, Kangana represented the saree better at Cannes last year. She looked like the classiest lady in the room in her Sabyasachi Akash Taara saree. I guess we were just hoping that the Indo-western elements were blended together instead of just throwing them in the mix.
Kangana is scheduled for more appearances and a red carpet walk pretty soon. Here’s hoping she brings some of that ‘devil may care’ attitude from last year back into her outfits!
